well i’m unexpectedly down an aunt and the funeral is as far away as it’s possible to be while still being in new york state. on monday. i’ve just missed two weeks of work, but i told them i gotta miss a little more. c’est la vie.
i’m going to amtrak this, and middle-little has agreed to pick me up, and then i can ride with her and my mom and another aunt. i am going to take a covid test tomorrow, though i have no symptoms, i just was through a zillion strange places and it seems prudent. i masked as much as possible on the plane but i was super careless while in colombia because i was so rarely indoors. and i had to take my mask off in the buffalo airport because whatever i ate/drank on that last flight had me so nauseous. (there was no meal service so it was prepackaged stuff, idk, but i have had A Time of it today, i’m Not Well. but i’m improving. it’s clearly not food poisoning, my tummy just violently disagreed with something in that package of… potato chips? nuts? maybe it was the stress? idk yes i know it’s really funny that i just ate my way through a small city in south america, subsisting on a combination of wildly unfamiliar fruits and vegetables and unusually-prepared fishes i’d never encountered before, and had not a bit of heartburn or upset anything, and a packet of salted mixed nuts on an airplane has done me in, but i suspect it’s not the food so much as the rest of everything that did this. yes i’m hydrating. i’ll be fine.)
anyway. amtrak. that’ll be relaxing ish. it’s fine. i have to go to this, we didn’t get to have an in-person wake for dad. i’ve missed enough funerals i wanted to go to; it’s possible for me to get to this one so by god i’m going to do it.
My aunt had been ill on and off for years with various things. She, Dad, and their brother all survived cancer in the same year, ages ago. Dad was the healthiest of the siblings. There were five of them, and Dad was number two, and this one was number three, the oldest girl. She was six feet tall and had this lovely deep voice and a deep, deep Queens accent, and kept exotic birds. Her two daughters have a couple of kids each. After my father died she wrote my mother a letter apologizing that she had not called, but her last round of illness had taken away her ability to speak out loud.
well. this is how things go sometimes. idk what i believe about the afterlife, but if it’s like in the stories then she and my dad can catch up a bit. He’d like that, he called all of his siblings every week. He was the one who kept in touch. (Your picture was not posted)
