personally i chose to read them chronologically, with the exception of the bby geralt story, which i read as a flashback after little fishie, and i felt it worked really well that way! it was cool seeing jaskier becoming Less Of A Mess that way, it sets it up for that being a theme later nicely imo!

Ha, I should reread in that order sometime, as i of course read them in the order I wrote them… well, actually, that order is somewhat deceptive because the multi-chaptered works were interspersed but are ordered by the date their first chapter was published, which isn’t really representative!

Ao3 will let you put specific individual works in multiple series, so you could make a series for each sequence and let the reader pick which way they want to experience it.

Oh, that’s a thought. But I think as a reader I’d be super confused thinking this author had several series and wanting to read them all but then being like… this is just the same works over and over. I’ve done it before where I had works in two series at the same time, because all of them were in the same ‘verse but some were in a different continuity, so I had a sub-set series within a series, but even that I wasn’t super good at maintaining… and IDK if any readers found it that useful.

As someone currently making my way thru the series, what i would appreciate most is if MDS was listed first and everything else was chronological? If that makes sense? Bc I want to start with where the story started, emotionally, but after that I just want to know when things are happening.

Yeah, that seems reasonable to me too– like, MDS is the First Story and I named the series after it and sticking it in the middle seems odd.

sometimes other authors who published out of chronological order leave it that way but put a list of the works in chronological order in the ao3 series summary so they can have their cake and eat it too!

THIS!!!! I think this is the solution. Thank you I am going to do this right away. That is exactly the way to handle it!! I might also stick a line explaining that into the summary of Meet Death Sitting, since it’s the first story and I probably don’t need to leave the Update As Of 3/07 announcement in the summary, LOL.

christinawritesfiction https://christinawritesfiction.tumblr.com/post/182510151820/i-want-my-writing-to-be-smart-heres-what-i-mean :

I want my writing to be smart.

Here’s what I mean: I want to write something you can understand on the first go, no problem. But then, the more you think about it, the more little things you realize. Are those little things essential to grasping the plot? No, but they enhance it. Most importantly, you feel smart for pointing them out, and I feel smart for writing them.

This is a very specific mood but I’ll be damned if I don’t also want this

I want people to read my work again and again, and each time they spot something and go “HOW DID I MISS THAT?!”

I feel this but I want to point out that the way to do this isn’t in language, it’s not in clever phrasing. It’s in thoroughly understanding the emotional reality of your characters. I can’t read “clever” stories anymore– I don’t have the concentration, I lose sight of the details. I cannot parse precious language easily, I lose track of convoluted reasoning.

But if your story is built on a rock-solid understanding of your characters, you will find things on a reread as the AUTHOR that you had not realized were there. He betrays her in chapter 5, and in chapter 3 you see that his speech is oddly stilted, he’s clearly hiding something, though it hadn’t seemed that way at the time. Your characters will put things like that there FOR you, and they will seem right as you write them, and it will be true, and sometimes you only discover them on the edit, but they’re there, already, for you– if you have your characters so nailed-down that they are correct and are themselves. That’s the key. It has to be honest, it cannot be you trying to trick your readers or your character.

So there’s my two cents, as a writer who writes things people find a lot of meaning in but that stay easy to follow. (Some of my best feedback was a reader saying they’d acquired a cognitive impairment that made reading fiction dicey but they could follow my stories, and as somebody with pretty bad untreated ADHD that sometimes means books are out of my reach, I felt that!!! I felt that.)

I get a feeling that he must have stepped squarely on the last one and gone through it.

This is definitely the big steppy of someone who has broken the thing before
