Today my sister and I were testing work lights as we set up the little gro-light tray that they use for literally like three weeks every year on the farm, until they get the greenhouse up and going. We plugged one in, turned it on, and the lights both blazed to life (the last one, they hadn’t), and we said, in perfect chorus and in the same tone of voice at the same instant, “Yaaayyy!”
It was sort of eerie, and unpremeditated, and we both laughed. Veg Manager was there and laughed too, and a bit later he was like “you sound like those sisters from the Simpsons,” so like, thanks for that. (We don’t, but I get what he was going for.)
When we were kids my poor uncle used to call us and then he’d try to guess who had answered the phone. But all four of us girls have the same speaking voice as our mother, more or less; our laughs are slightly different, but not very. He’d gamely pick a name and go for it, and then be upset when he was inevitably wrong, but we were like dude we can’t tell the difference, why would you be able to??
My big sister has an accent now, after all these years in the Army, but I still can’t tell the rest of us apart without waiting for a turn of phrase or a mannerism. but since we don’t all live under the same roof and share a land-line phone, it doesn’t really come up, anymore.
