i had Big Plans for being Productive today and so I got three loads of laundry done but then I lay down for a moment to take a half-hour nap and woke up with the kind of menstrual cramps that run all the way down your legs and make you weak in your whole self so now i’m just sitting here refreshing tumblr and wanting to go back to bed :(
oh this never posted. well, that’s just as well. hours later, the cramps are back, but i just got back from celebrating a belated christmas at dude’s mom’s house. and i had written up an unusual christmas list this year because she always struggles to find me things that are… never quite to my taste, we come from very different sorts of aesthetics, and we’ve had some hits and some misses, but. I said this year I’d rather get vintage or local-made stuff, and wrote up some examples of what kind of things I wanted, mentioning a number of things that I had lost when the yurt burned (all my amber jewelry, for example), and in return, she went through her storage and got out all kinds of old family treasures that she knew her daughter didn’t want (Dude’s only sibling), and gave them to me.
Including a pile, I mean a dragon hoard pile, in a beautiful engraved wooden box, of amber jewelry her mother and aunt brought from Latvia. A beautiful jade necklace the aunt who lived in the house I live in now had given her. Brooches, from her mother, from this aunt. Oh, and this aunt’s treasured string of pearls; no idea if they were real but she wore them for special occasions.
And a wool blanket, full-sized, fringed, that her mother had brought with her from Latvia.
And a ring made from an old silver spoon with a K engraved on it, which her mother-in-law had had made for her and for her sisters-in-law from some of the old family silver, which was no longer a complete set. Their last initial is a K and so is mine even though I never married Dude and so did not take his name. (I would not take his name anyway, my K last name is five letters long and his is twelve, no thanks.) I have no idea if it will fit me but I am going to wear it on a chain if it doesn’t, because that is extremely cool.
She was apologetic, and gave me money too, because she thought it wasn’t a very good gift, but these were all family treasures she had no more use for, and she has no granddaughters who would want jewelry, so I might as well. I am so delighted.
