Shh listen mods are asleep, I can post about how Aragorn/Denethor is actually a hollywood-script worthy ship and should be way more prevalent

Either fanfic writers ignore Aragorn’s backstory completely or they make references to him having ‘met’ Denethor in an ephemeral ‘before’ no! They were Captains together, rival Captains to boot, Denethor is exactly a year older than Aragorn and they were both powerful, bold, heroic lords of men together. They drove the Corsairs from Pelargir together!!!

Not only this, Denethor was essentially in a constant battle to appear worthy in his father’s eyes. Ecthelion emotionally sidelined his own son for this stranger from the north, can you even IMAGINE the amount of angst and furious pining that could have gone on between these two in this situation. NEITHER of them wanted to like each other but goddamnit they do! It’s a perfect example of the ‘god no, really? them?’ ship dynamic, they would suit each other so well if the situation didn’t make it the exact opposite. Absolute gold dust I tell you!

That was the entire plot of Hands of the King, I think it was called, by…. it wasn’t Altariel? I do not remember who it was. I read it on Henneth-Annun Story Archive, circa 2004, and it was about 350,000 words long, and I have absolutely no idea if it is still online. It dealt with Thorongil’s coming to Minas Tirith, and the courtship of Denethor and Finduilas, with a fantastic bit where Thorongil sort of falls for Finduilas and there’s some Fantastic Tension There, and a great deal of subplot about Umbar, I believe, and there was so much worldbuilding about the society of Minas Tirith, and some really fantastic dark stuff, Denethor was the main protagonist but you could see how the strain he was under was sort of warping him, and it was super super good, and I have no idea whether it was ever finished and a quick Google does not give me much hope that it got ported over to AO3– but maybe it did, and I’m just not searching for it quite right.

OMG IT WAS BY ANGLACHEL AND IT IS IN FACT ON AO3 AND IT IS 85 CHAPTERS LONG BASK IN IT, MY ANGELS

(edited to add: do you know how I found this? I typed "hotk" into my gmail search bar and found the last-ever update notice from the Henneth-Annun Workshop Forums, dated 2007, and then searched the title and the author's name on AO3 and sure enough, it did get ported there a few years back. OMG.)

[profile] bomberqueen17 SO. you did miss the point of this post in it’s entirety and even if I’m usually buck wild for gondorian world building, this specific post was about how great a Denethor/Aragorn romantic ship would be on account of their canon interactions and large shared history

ohhhhhh sorry I got super blindsided by my overwhelming recollection of the LotR fandom from uhhhhh twelve years ago, that I missed the slash aspect of it and went straight into the just-in-general relationship, because like, that was some pretty rich material there. It is a relationship that has been explored, just not romantically in that instance. But like. Even non-romantically, I figured it was still relevant because they are clearly pretty intensely paired.

But I was so. So so so. So obsessed with that fic so long ago. And I had completely forgotten it. And it was kind of mind-blowing to remember that that entire fic existed and still does, so I got pretty caught up in it.

I maintain, on more sober reflection, that this is still a relevant rec if you’re interested in the characters, and you wouldn’t find it if you were only looking for slash and due to its age it’s likely that even people interested in those characters might not find it unaided, but I also agree, someone should write the slash version of this because no, this fic doesn’t go the specific place you were wishing for, sexually. It’s just that if a perfect fic doesn’t exist, sometimes a not quite but almost rec is still worth making, and I’m sorry that the romance was the entire point for you, but there are probably some other readers who would still be interested, and who knows, reading it could possibly even inspire another writer to go where you were actually hoping with the slash part of it. Sometimes that’s how transformative fandoms work? I’m not being snippy, I’m being genuine here.
