oh i forgot i did this but when i was at the farm this last time i was talking about santa to farmkid (not quite 5) and she was like “i know what santa looks like, i’ve seen him on the front of a puzzle box” or somesuch, and I was like, oh, but what if santa is a shapeshifter

and after I insisted on this a little while she was like “yeah santa is a shapeshifter”

so like, you’re welcome, kid, have fun unraveling that in therapy later

I don’t remember why I did this, though, so I can’t tell you whether it was justified or not

but I very much did convince my not-quite-5-year-old niece that Santa is a shapeshifter, so.

here’s a weird tip:

the tea I’m making out of oregano and thyme and honey and assorted herbal shit I can find around my house is approximately as good at alleviating my cough as the Mucinex cough syrup, though for a shorter duration (effect only lasts about an hour past last sip). Regular tea (black, green, whatever) is effective only while being drunk (effect might persist a little while past last sip but not a long while.)

I should do another test and just drink honey water and see how it helps, because the regular tea I was drinking was sweetened with sugar instead, and i think the honey is beneficial.

FWIW though, the thyme infusion has a weird effect where it dries out my tongue a little, so I think it’s relevant. The issue I’m really having with this cold is that the mucous is really thick and sticky, and so I have issues where I just can’t blow my nose, and can’t clear my throat, and so on.

Walking to work this morning probably helped, actually– it’s not cold enough for the cold to impact my breathing (it’s above 20, which I think is my cutoff for that), and breathing hard a little probably did a lot to clear me out mechanically. I was less light-headed at rest today after yesterday’s day of healing, so it seemed like a good chance to take, and I think I was right.

So anyhow– thyme is a good mucus-remover, or whatever. And if you sweeten it enough it tastes, well. It tastes weird as fuck, I’m not going to lie, but it’s not an actively unpleasant flavor.

paeanssong replied to your post “AYYY I MADE PAR ON THE NANO SITE!! 44,281 to beat today’s expected par…”

Another childhood asthmatic here. If you go to the doctor, ask for a steroid inhaler too. I use one only when I start getting signs of a cold, and it helps stop the process and massively decrease the albuterol I use. It means I can sleep at night now which is frankly amazing after years sitting up coughing.

Oh yeah, I got a prescription for a steroid inhaler but at the time, my insurance didn’t cover it so it was literally 75% of my monthly income for a single month’s supply. So actually, my dad, whose medication is covered, changed inhalers, and gave me his old ones because he knew I couldn’t get my own. So I do have a small supply of the maintenance inhalers, and i try to remember to take them for the weeks leading up to, and through, cold season, but of course I’ve forgotten until now. I’m managing to remember one dose a day, out of the two it recommends, lately, so there’s that. Here’s hoping it keeps me from the dreaded 50+ Days Of Coughing of years gone by…

I wonder if my current insurance would cover my own inhalers. These are expired, now that I look at them. But they’re the same ones I would have been prescribed, at least, so. (I did check.)

I will probably ask for another rescue inhaler, as I’ve run out of those. (Those were only $100, under my then-shit insurance! Ugh.) I don’t like what albuterol does to my literal-everything (i get high blood pressure headaches, weird dreams, and my heart pounds), but I do like breathing, a lot.

certainly would make it easier for him to get down chimneys

This suddenly gave me a vision of, like, what form would be easiest to use to climb down a chimney, and I was like

IT’S THE CHRISTMAS ANACONDA

I need to be stopped.

Oh, that’s not a bad idea. She has one, though, and her days of colonial re-enactment are long behind her. It’s not an area she’s particularly interested in anymore.

I couldn’t machine-embroider that, it would have to be hand-embroidered, and I don’t have time at this point. I like the idea, but for this time-crunched situation, I’m probably going to stick to the pillow idea.

I no longer want to see this spelled any other way.
