I got home, right, and we went to Easter dinner, and then came home and napped, and then Dude got up and earnestly made a crock pot full of chili using a completely foreign recipe that hadn’t been in our repertoire before, and it was all vaguely puzzling, and now we have a lot of chili. But he has never done that before, I realized– he does a lot of cooking, but this– he did the browning of things the night before, then got up early Monday morning and assembled the rest of everything in the crock pot before starting work for the day, and my god, I’ve lived with him since 2002 and he’s never done that before. It was… it was weird.
If he were a pod-person, speaking theoretically, I mean– I’ve known him since 2001, it’s not like… like I’d… miss that, right? But I was away for a week and anything could have happened in that time. There could be some sort of larval psychic entity wearing his skin like a suit, and I might not realize it.
But I don’t think that crock pot chili is the way that a larval psychic entity would use a Dude suit on its first go, would it? I mean…
I don’t know. I can’t pretend to understand how an alien would think, in this case. But it’s going to haunt me a little bit.

I would go with asking. And also praising the behaviour you want to be repeated. Maybe he’ll do it again :)
YOu can’t just ASK someone if they’re a POD PERSON!
LOL. He cooks all the time, it was just such a weird variation on what we usually cook. I do the planning and the hard stuff, he does the weird frying pan shenanigans.
We have a bunch of Easter leftovers that I know his tactic will be to eat like, half of, and then leave until they go moldy. I’d wanted to go through and use them to make other dishes but now we have all this chili so I guess I’ll just let him eat the parts I could’ve reused, and then throw away the rest when he doesn’t do it.
Not to be ungrateful. Plenty of people have dudes who just won’t cook. I’m glad he does. And this was clearly something he’d thought of, because I always have to come back from out of town and then figure out what we’re eating for the week without knowing what’s in the pantry. So I’m glad. It’s just. You know. Where did this come from??
