With Solarpunk, we should be talking about aesthetics and aspirations, like, say, wooden skyscrapers, cities ditching problematic sewers and turning to using sustainably-sourced humanure production to sequester carbon by sending this urban carbon to be buried in the untilled soil on multi-ethnic, diversely gendered, community supported, sustainable farms. With all the pathogens nicely controlled, thank you very much. And definitely there must be shiny solar panels on every surface that points either to the equator or to the west.

Unfortunately, the real-world trends embodied in events like the meetings I regurgitated above mean that the next few decades are far more likely to be old-school Noir Solarpunk, with the wealthy and powerful forcing the rural and less advantaged to deal with the problems activists like me bring up, just as they have for decades now.

A customer is on the phone pitching a fit because yesterday when he called, he told us he had need of a particular service, and we gave him the price for that service over the phone. When he came in, he actually needed a totally different service, which is more expensive. The item he had was not what he’d described over the phone, but rather something much less common that would need custom work to complete.

He thinks we should give him the price for the service we quoted over the phone, even though what he had wasn’t what he’d said he had. He also hadn’t warned us that he didn’t know what he had; he spoke with confidence, but the confidence was utterly misplaced.

Lord, if I am ever like this, just go ahead and take me, ok???

lettersfromtitan:

There are like five other things Erin and I should have bee working on, but the winter Olympics happened and we got distracted.

For over a decade, world-champion ice skaters Katie Nowaki and Brendan Reid have been partners in every way but one. But now that their electric on-ice chemistry has led them to Olympic gold, they’re retiring from competition.

As they cross America on an exhibition tour with their fellow athletes, Katie and Brendan’s always volatile relationship becomes more turbulent than ever as they face down the media, their fans, and their increasingly nosy teammates.

When Katie realizes she wants to go back to the farm she grew up on, leaving Brendan behind in the city where they trained, their fairy tale seems destined to end.

But will Brendan be able to convince her to trust him with the off-ice intimacy that only spelled disaster in their past?

- Farm is a family dairy farm run by heroine’s mom, heroine’s uncle, and uncle’s partner because queer people exist in rural places too. Also not a plot point, ordinary queerness!
- Cow friends!
- Ambition ambition ambition, and what do you do with yourself after you’ve gotten everything you’ve ever wanted and now you have to go to a meeting because someone wants to sell a doll branded with your face and it’s freaky and no?
- No common triggers. Feel free to ask if you need to know anything.

I decided to get off my ass last night and do the laundry I’d been procrastinating on, and I have mostly succeeded at that, there’s one small load left to do. I have this whole insane laundry system where some things get tumbled for like 10 minutes and then hung to dry, some things get tumbled for like an hour, and other things never touch the dryer and are only hung up, and I managed to do the first half of that yesterday, and let them hang overnight until dry, and then this morning I woke up in time to finish a load that I’d let soak, and then put in the load of hang-dry delicates, and also TAKE THEM OUT AND HANG THEM UP, and I’m sort of smug about my ability to time all that correctly.

I ALSO did all the dishes while waiting for the coffee to brew and the first load to do its rinse cycle, because it’s about to be ant season and I’m trying to keep the kitchen cleanish.

AND, last night, while doing laundry, I managed to knock out a machine-embroidered flower to finish Farmsister’s jeans-to-skirt conversion project. I want to bring it to the farm when I go but her birthday’s not for another couple of weeks, and if I bring it, she’s going to see me working on it. So maybe I’ll leave it here. I don’t think I can finish it before I go. I want to keep working on it though.

Oh well. I also had enough discipline to stop reading my book last night and save the big climactic ending section of Harbors of the Sun to read at work today, since I’ve proven I can still get my work done while reading.

tiny-loudness:

Dmitri Prigov (1940-2007) was a Russian conceptual poet, artist, and dissident. One of the things he is famous for is his стихограммы (стих ‘poem’ + грамма (’gram’, a part of words like phonogram or program, from Greek γράμμα ‘recording’))

I don’t understand much about poetry, and probably neither do you, but I mean look at that

Как я весел! Как я мил! – How cheerful I am! How nice I am!Смерть рядом – Death is near

Ин вино веритас – ‘In vino veritas’ (Latin), In wine there is truthА в пиве что? – And what’s there in beer?

В начале было слово, и слово было у Бога, и слово было Бог (сentral circle) – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God И свет во тьме светит –

And the light shines in the darkness

Если враг не сдается, его уничтожают – If the enemy does not surrender, he must be destroyedНет – NoВраг – Enemy

И восстанут они все из могил своих, и призовут нас всех к ответу – And then they will all rise up from their graves and bring us all to justice
