so much of TLJ only happens because Rian Johnson wants to “surprise” the audience and to show that the movie isn’t going to go the way we think. luke’s x-wing is only shown under the water so that when he shows up on crait we think he’s really there. it only exists to fool us so we’re surprised when it’s revealed no, he didn’t use the x-wing, he’s not really here!! Holdo’s condescending attitude and her refusal to share the plans with anyone, even officers on the bridge, only exists so that when it’s revealed she has a plan all along the audience is surprised that she was “right” and Poe was “wrong”. A lot of this movie is deliberately misleading so that the audience will be surprised by these twists - some people will accept this and even think it’s a clever thing to do, but really it just shows a lack of ability to create genuine intrigue. Rather than crafting a story where there are little hints of the surprise to come so when the twist happens we put it all together and think “Of course!!” and are satisfied, this movie WANTS the audience to think the wrong thing so that it can cleverly reveal “the truth” (which that had no reason to be hidden in the first place except to surprise the audience). When a movie relies so heavily on Doylist reasoning the audience feels cheated and frustrated AND the characterizations suffer from characters being made to act nonsensically in service of what the writer wants to achieve

Still working on the “Fuck Winter” crazy quilt. I had sort of meant to space out the embroidered panels with some plain ones, but honestly that’s not how crazy quilts work so I don’t feel bad at sort of blowing them all on the bit I’m currently working on. The tiny-pieced-strips square is still separate somewhere, and I’m not sure how many more embroidered pieces I’m going to make for this guy. I have a couple still unplaced. And this isn’t remotely square so I gotta figure out how to make it square, and then sew it down to one coherent piece of backing, and then decide if I’m going to make it into a lap quilt or a wall hanging or what. It could be a lap quilt, actually; I haven’t put any beads or anything that couldn’t be made sturdy and not-poky on it. So who knows.

Anyway. This is where it’s at, lower corner not attached and just laid out. Just to let y’all know I’m still actually working on it, for accountability, because this is about how far I often get into projects before abandoning them.

Huh DropBox is somehow taking 20 minutes to upload the photos I took with my phone like ten minutes ago. How much you wanna bet Tumblr will have some difficulty with connection and render this post unpostable in that amount of time? I can’t tell y’all how often I cut all the text out of a window, close the page, reopen, and paste the text back into a new window because Tumblr lost connection and has no meaningful error handling. (The “post” button just greys out after you click it, then comes back. No matter what you do you can’t post without reloading the page. If you’ve just spent ten minutes tagging your shit, you can’t save that, it’s gone forever. Nice.) (Mm I just turned off the wifi and am using my data instead, that fixed it. Great. Good to know.)
(hey go figure i had to reload the page to post this. unsurprising.)

NOPE can’t upload a picture! Sorry for that absolutely stupid tease. But I’ve wasted all this time typing this, so. I’ll post a photo later. The wifi at work BLOWS GOATS; we pay for 60 megabytes per second but on a good day we get 3, and most days we get .8, and we called and they’re like “it’s your network it’s not us at all!” and BULL FUCKING SHIT but in this neighborhood Time Warner has a monopoly so they don’t have to do shit.

In other news I dressed foxy all week– yesterday was a slick black shirt-dress from Torrid with lace stockings and super-high heels (because! it was! above!!! freezing!!!!!), the day before was a bright red lace-bodice gauze-skirt dress and a red glittery hair-flower, the day before was a navy blue jersey dress over maroon leggings and purple legwarmers with a cropped jean jacket, which sounds gaudy but it was all muted shades– and today I’m dressed like a weirdo in a corduroy vest and a polka-dot skirt and neon purple tights and I’ve got blue mascara on because I put it on and thought hey that looks super eerie I dig it, and Dude looks me up and down as I’m getting my coat on and says “lookin’ sharp today!”

I mean, sure, I put thought into my Look, but my thought was much more “what would amuse me” and less “what would look cute” than usual. Which, I guess, goes to show you, get someone who likes you for you. For the record, though, in the past Dude has had a terrible track record of saying “what are you wearing” when I’m in something I like. He’s getting better, maybe, or maybe I’m getting better…

I’m still thinking about that novel I didn’t write for NaNoWriMo this year.

The solarpunk one, that was gonna have megafauna in it.

I still basically don’t have a plot. What I have, are character notes, which are mostly to do with the worldbuilding and gender roles.

I know who’d be in the story and why. But I still don’t know what the story would be about.

So. That’s a thing. *sigh*
