*softly* um please tell me what this song is because I don’t know either and I actually work with The Youth of Today

My family only listened to classical music and jazz, and I didn’t start listening to music composed after 1950 until senior year of high school. And then it was all obscure electronica. So I’m in the same boat.

Can I tell you that I had the same exact experience with that song? My boyfriend was all ???????? How did this esxsoe you? And…*shrug* never heard it, never realized it was INSANELY popular, but there it is. Bernstein universe level stuff.

I don’t know it at all either, I’m so glad I’m not the only one!!

Thank you, all of you.

It’s the song behind the following meme artifacts:

“coming out of my cage and I’m doing just fine” which is often parodied as a lot of things, some in all-caps, I had envisioned a much more, uh, emphatic song? It’s the song’s opening line and it’s delivered in a sneer/whine, I have no idea how it morphed as it did for a thousand memes.

“she’s falling asleep and he’s calling a cab” mostly I see this parodied with calling a crab, or made into a series of nonsense phrases, but recognizably formed around the structure of this sentence

and innumerable references to the name of the song, worked into a billion different things.

Here’s the thing– it’s NOT a Youth Of Today-style song, it’s at least a dozen years old.

@lazaefair– I grew up exclusively on NPR, classical music, sometimes jazz, and some Irish folk music but only vintage LPs of it, nothing contemporary, until I was in junior high and figured out that the dial on my radio moved. I moved it, to the hoochie-pop station, in time for Madonna’s Sex album, which mostly just totally confused me. (I remember TLC too.) I tried an oldies station for a while, which at least meant I’d heard some Beatles songs by high school.

But here’s the thing about the pre-Internet days: I could only hear what the DJ played, with no context, and if I missed the announcer saying who it was, I was stuck. I woke up one morning to my clock radio going off playing “Hotel California” but it was halfway through. I lay there in astonishment trying to figure out what the fuck it was, and was nearly late because I had to wait for the song to end, but the DJ didn’t say what it had been.

it was years before i found out what song it had been. I had no way to look it up. there was no Google y’all. There was no shazam. There wasn’t even Wikipedia. There wasn’t any kind of database on the Internet. This would have been circa 1995. I literally had no way to realize that it was just the Eagles being the Eagles. I had no context.

Anyway. Most of what I know about pop music I actually learned in 2014 to write Bucky’s journey of pop culture discovery in The Night Has Seen Your Mind. I’m not even making that up. I got a Google Play subscription and read Wikipedia pages, I’m not even kidding.

here I have a totally trivial, stupid, amusing, absolutely-zero-stakes spoiler-free no-drama Discourse About Star Wars for you:

[image description: a snapshot from the The Visual Dictionary or whatever that is, with an image of a silver-colored ring on a silver-colored chain, and the caption “RING NECKLACE: Poe wears the wedding ring of his late mother, Shara Bey, on a necklace, waiting to share it someday with the right partner.” end ID]

OK Shara Bey’s wedding ring. I honestly didn’t notice Poe wearing it in the movie but like. It’s a thing, the fic writers fucking love it, Carrie Fisher is a genius for the Space Jewelry thing. Also is that steel? It looks bad as hell, I love it.

BUT.

We have one (1) canon source of Shara Bey, and that’s the Shattered Empire comics, which I finally read. And:

[image description: Shara Bey from the Shattered Empire comics, with her bare, gloveless, ringless left hand, fingers splayed, pressed up against the inside of a ship’s window, saying “That is indeed my husband.” end ID]

There she is. That’s her left hand in that picture. Mm maybe they wear rings right-handed in a star war! Or, since most of her canon appearances are spent wearing gloves and full flight uniform stuff, maybe she doesn’t wear the ring when she’s gonna be wearing gloves too. So let’s see Shara out of uniform:

[image description: Shara Bey, looking satisfied in a pink graphic-front t-shirt, dusting dirt off her bare hands as Kes, holding a shovel over his shoulder, extends a gloved hand to her and says, “Let’s go home, Shara Bey.” end ID]

ambiguous, but let’s look closer

[image description: both of Shara Bey’s bare hands patting down the dirt next to the roots of a small tree. No rings are visible, but all ten fingers are visible. end ID]

oh dear that one shows both hands too so the right hand ring hypothesis is out the window

SO

we are left with some Possibilities

#1 she does not wear her ring for flying or gardening but of course does for all other things

#2 she did not have a ring yet and was gifted it later, perhaps for an anniversary or, like, as a We Survived The War present, and it was just easier to say “wedding ring” in the description and if it was a gift from her husband then it’s the same diff right?

#3 she never wore the damn thing at all or #3a wore it on a chain just like her son does

#4 really it’s a subset of #1, she had a ring that she did not wear during the war (for fear of it being lost with her body if she was killed? having always intended to leave it to her son??????) and she hadn’t put it back on yet in that last panel since she’d only just arrived home from a dangerous mission, and in fact she never wore it when she was flying just in case she got exploded or something so that the ring would still be left even if there was no body for her family to bury  which is totally what happened grief-stricken pterodactyl-like screech of distress

worth noting: no rings visible on Kes’s hands either are wedding rings really even a thing in the star war??? ??? ?? ???

is it not really a wedding ring, per se, but that was the most succinct way of referring to it?

(The comic book artist not being interested in drawing jewelry is not a possibility this is not how we Discourse around these parts!)

Also for the uninitiated, check out Shara Bey’s beautiful visible facial scar ok that thing on her eyebrow is in every frame she’s depicted in enough detail to show, it’s clearly intentionally part of her character design, and ok it’s not exactly disfiguring but tell me the last time you saw an Unambiguously Good Heroine with a notable facial scar??? It is very clearly not a decorative body mod, not an eyebrow ring or something, but definitely a scar. (which actually feeds back to my previous point: if the artists were willing to include a detail like that surely they could have drawn a ring if that had been imagined for Shara when the series was written, so—)

ANYHOW.

Please someone talk about how Shara didn’t have/wear a ring during the war and keep in mind that by the time of those last frames, Poe’s like two or three years old. He might conceivably remember her getting the ring if it was A Thing.

I’m just tired of being the only person obsessed with shara bey

700,000 Female Farmworkers Say They Stand With Hollywood Actors Against Sexual Assault:

chamerionwrites:

cheltrei:

We do not work under bright stage lights or on the big screen. We work in the shadows of society in isolated fields and packinghouses that are out of sight and out of mind for most people in this country. Your job feeds souls, fills hearts and spreads joy. Our job nourishes the nation with the fruits, vegetables and other crops that we plant, pick and pack.

Even though we work in very different environments, we share a common experience of being preyed upon by individuals who have the power to hire, fire, blacklist and otherwise threaten our economic, physical and emotional security. Like you, there are few positions available to us and reporting any kind of harm or injustice committed against us doesn’t seem like a viable option. Complaining about anything — even sexual harassment — seems unthinkable because too much is at risk, including the ability to feed our families and preserve our reputations.

We understand the hurt, confusion, isolation and betrayal that you might feel. We also carry shame and fear resulting from this violence. It sits on our backs like oppressive weights. But, deep in our hearts we know that it is not our fault. The only people at fault are the individuals who choose to abuse their power to harass, threaten and harm us, like they have harmed you.

In these moments of despair, and as you cope with scrutiny and criticism because you have bravely chosen to speak out against the harrowing acts that were committed against you, please know that you’re not alone. We believe and stand with you.

In solidarity,

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas
