My mum’s cat Tibby has gone missing, he is small and black and has a microchip (which tragically does NOT have a ‘find my cat’ function, someone in tech get on that?) but no collar. I know it’s vanishingly unlikely that this post will reach whoever it is in the Hills Road area of Cambridge, England, whose house he’s moved into, but my stepdad died last year and mum really loves that cat so if the mysterious ways of the Internet could help get him back for her, it would mean a lot to us. Or give me the illusion of control over something I actually have no control over at all, one or the other.

I had an epiphany today…we’re all Humans. The First Order, I mean. We live in a vast and diverse galaxy peopled with every kind of life form, and I have yet to meet a non-Human among our ranks. I even asked a few fellow troops that I’ve never seen out of uniform and they confirmed - they’re just as Human as I.
When I passed Captain Phasma in the hall today, I asked her what was up.
She said when Supreme Leader Snoke first formed the First Oder, he’d planned on recruiting all sorts of beings - Shistavanen, Trandoshans, even a few Devaronians. But the armorer was drunk the night Snoke placed his first uniform order, and accidentally made 20,000 Human-style suits. Things just sort of spiraled out of control from there.

That time

I thought I could not

go any closer to grief

without dying

I went closer,
and I did not die.
Surely God
had his hand in this,

as well as friends.
Still, I was bent,
and my laughter,
as the poet said,

was nowhere to be found.
Then said my friend Daniel,
(brave even among lions),
“It’s not the weight you carry

but how you carry it –
books, bricks, grief –
it’s all in the way
you embrace it, balance it, carry it

when you cannot, and would not,
put it down.”
So I went practicing.
Have you noticed?

Have you heard
the laughter
that comes, now and again,
out of my startled mouth?

How I linger
to admire, admire, admire
the things of this world
that are kind, and maybe

also troubled –
roses in the wind,
the sea geese on the steep waves,
a love
to which there is no reply?
