The Internet collectively agrees with me on this. (I have gotten more comments about that picture than all my others like ever put together! People care a lot about cousinship!)
So my sister’s daughter and my first cousin’s daughters are second cousins to one another. My father’s first cousin, who should turn up this afternoon to join the party, is my first cousin once removed, and my first cousin (my father’s niece)’s daughter’s first cousin twice removed. (Actually his relationship to my cousin’s daughter is the same as his relationship to my sister’s daughter; to both of them he’s a first cousin twice removed, because his relationship to my father is identical to his relationship to my cousin’s father, since they are brothers.)
Tongue twister, sort of, but it makes perfect sense if you’re in the middle of it.
