zigga-zogga
Mar. 21st, 2009 08:20 amDidn't forget to call Mom last night. Huzzah. First day of spring, Mom's birthday, and the birthday of my best friend from kindergarten are all on the same day, and yet I still manage not to remember to do anything about any of them... Well, anyway, I remembered to call Mom, and left my friend a Facebook comment, at least. (Her birthday present was a diamond ring. Very shiny.)
She was just home from a fancy dinner. She's become so amusing about her food-- "Dinner cost as much as I normally spend on groceries for two weeks," she said. Not shocked at the price, I think, but more smug that she is normally so thrifty. (They do eat well, lots of fresh organic food. I haven't figured out how to be that "good" yet.)
Mom was glad to hear that I was figuring out Gram's sewing machine. She said she very vividly remembered playing with the fasteners on the case, which are intricate and really neat, when she was about ten or so, maybe a bit younger. Since she turned 58 yesterday, that means the sewing machine has to be at least 50 years old, but probably more. I said I thought Gram had said she got it before she got married, but Mom said she didn't think so, she thinks it may have been a shortly-after-wedding acquisition. I'd have to ask Gram. So I will.
It does skip stitches. There's a wheel that has a +/- symbol on it above the sewing arm, so I keep adjusting that, but it seems to have no effect. I think I may need to set aside the stretch-lamé booty shorts and work on something with longer, simple seams for a bit so I can more fearlessly put the machine through its paces. But what? Hmmm.
