dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (bluefairy)
For the last three (four?) mornings, I have been awakened between 5 and 5:30 by the enthusiastic attentions of a medium-sized dog. I let Dave sleep in my old bedroom, and bedded down on the cot in the little playroom just off the living room, because I know sleep's more important to Dave, the cot's only about 5' 5" long, and when people are awake they sit in the living room and talk, whether it's 11pm or 5:30 am. So... I didn't get much sleep this week. Though I took a few naps in there while everyone was talking in the living room, and it was nice because I was exhausted enough that it didn't keep me awake, but if I was waking I could contribute to the conversation if I so desired.

But every morning at 5, whether I closed the doors or not, Scout would get in one way or another and would give me kisses and wriggles, and would paw at me and jump onto the bed and be excited. I let her up on the bed and covered her in the blankets a couple times, and that amused her. But the doggy-feet noise of her approach was always accompanied by a family member (Mom, Dad, or Katy) furiously hissing, "Scout! Scout! No! Get back here!" Which always went entirely unheeded.

She's a good dog, and doesn't bite now except for very, very occasionally she'll put her mouth on someone. She still chews like crazy, but not on people now. She's still very very high-energy, and loved this vacation because there was almost always someone at any time of day willing to either go outside and run around with her, or wrestle her all over the living room floor. Ann, within minutes of her arrival home on Wednesday, had thrown herself on the floor and was rolling over and over and over with Scout, who loved her immedately for it. Novelty is a big factor in Scout's appreciation of people.
Also, Ann, who has become a nerdy dirty hippie at Cornell (she's majoring in Natural Resources or something hippie), has extremely tasty perpetually-bare feet. Scout enjoyed them immensely. Num, num, feet. Ann being horribly ticklish, this resulted in still more wrestling bouts.

Scout does come when called, and I don't think her leash was used at all while she was at the Melrose house. We went on a big long walk out back, past the first stream and down to the second and even beyond, and down to the third, down to the bottom of the ravine where the second and third streams meet, and back up along the second to the place where the ravine is scalable back up to the cornfield and back across the first stream again at the wobbly plank behind the garage. Scout was no further than 100 feet from us at any time, and frequently ran up to check on each member of the party. This was most amusing when Fiona was the last one down the very steep slope to the tongue of land that separates the third and second streams. The earlier members of the party had slid a little on the muddy slope, and so good solid footholds were hard for Fiona to find, and she had to wait for me to negotiate the slope with not one but two cameras (carrying mine, using Katy's-- my memory card was full). Scout decided Fiona needed help, and ran UP the slope to kiss Fiona, and then leapt down it again to come to Katy (who was about to attempt to cross the second stream), and then UP again to run into Fiona's legs, and then down again to go see Adam, and then UP again... Fiona finally made it down when someone mercifully distracted the puppy.

We also got her to leap across the second stream four times, and each time I missed getting a picture. i did get a picture of Adam leaping across, though.

So, in short, i was awake early this morning, a little wistful as I realized I wasn't going to be greeted by the puppy. Or fed by my mother afterward. (My mom was on a cooking binge. It was pretty sweet. She gets like that.)

I am making progress again on the novel-- I did little while at home-- and am going to meet up with the NaNoers in my area this afternoon at 3 at Higher Grounds on Sheridan by Millersport Hwy. That should be fun.

I think I've caught up on my flist but am not sure.

I will never catch up on my journal. But that's ok.

I don't think I'll finish the novel before December

I still don't know if I have a job. I do know I can't afford anything right now. I specially bought an answering machine so when the airport people called me back this week they could leave a message, but I forgot to turn it on!! So i don't know if they called, and I have no contact info for them. Bleh. I am so broke, broke, broke, broke.

And the landlady? can't get through to her. Joys. I am not driving to Westchester and camping on her doorstep, because I can't afford it.

And Dave? Has to take off another quarter and get a job for a little while. He's determined to finish in the spring, but taking winter quarter off has its upsides. Like, avoiding the worst of the snow on the highways. And, well, not having any choice because of brokety-broke-broke-brokeness.

Bleh, money sucks.

Well.

A few Good Things for the day.

#1: I got a phone call.
The bar down the street wants me part-time. Four days this week to train me. I start Monday morning at 11.

A JOB! Wow! Not much money, but it's something, and it means I can afford groceries. Well, next week. Until then, it's going to be some rather boring cleaning out of the pantry. Plain rice, anyone?

#2: I went to the regional meetup of NaNo people at Higher Grounds coffeeshop on Sheridan & Millersport. I got a pin and some stickers there, and all sat solemnly in awe of my MASSIVE wordcount and the fact that I have, in fact, written a novel.

#3: I uploaded my file to NaNoWriMo and am officially A Winner. I know, it's not exactly significant, but there it is for whatever it's worth.

#4: I planted a lilac bush in my front yard and will, early tomorrow morning, plant another and two burning bushes. I have free shrubs from home! Yay! My house will look like a real person who cares lives here!

#5: Dave has spent the day working on the backup server and by the end of the weekend, it should be operational. Yay for not losing everything if my computer goes south!!

OK, I've put up the best 120 of my photos from Thanksgiving. The vast majority are of Scout. But there are some that aren't.

The index page has a list of my 14 favorite photos, if you don't think you're up to seeing all 120 and just want a representative sampling. ;)

Here they are:
