SHOT OPENS on our young asian protagonist. she is at home with her loving asian family, eating dinner and laughing. SHOT PANS over family photos, gymnastics trophies, photos of her mother shaking hands with very important people. conversation turns to one of the mother’s cases. protagonist’s father is worried, she is dismissive, it is revealed that she is a district attorney who has made many enemies.
LATER protagonist is in her bedroom, awake in the middle of the night. SHOTS OF INTERIOR: the shadow of branches over her window, moonlight thrown over her posters of pop stars, close up of a stuffed bunny slumped over on a chair. protagonist stands, rubbing her eyes, and starts walking to her parent’s bedroom.
SUDDENLY, a CRASH and a SCREAM. protagonist is in the middle of the hallway and sees her father struggling with a shadowy man. mystery man is wearing a BLACK COWBOY HAT and a BLACK BANDANA over the bottom half of his face. protagonist flees into a coat closet as MORE COWBOYS come running up the stairs. they all are wearing BLACK HATS. protagonist’s father is gunned down. protagonist’s mother runs out into the hallway but is LASSOED in front of her young, horrified eyes. protagonist’s mother makes eye contact with her through the crack in the coat closet but before she can say anything a gun is put to her temple and she is SHOT.
young protagonist recoils in horror, shoving herself into the back of the coat closet. CLOSEUP of the last thing she sees through the closet door: a BLACK BOOT stepping in front of her dead mother’s face, with a jangling silver spur.
FAST FORWARD ten years. protagonist is in her late teens. shot follows her into a decrepit COUNTRY WESTERN BAR. the doors swing open at her touch and we get a first glimpse at PROTAGONIST. she is no-nonsense, no make-up, hair pulled back and wearing a leather jacket and jeans. clearly out of place.
the bar looks UNFRIENDLY. the men and women in it are in scruffy western gear, and it appears there are drug deals going on in the corners. a very twangy COUNTRY-WESTERN song plays in the background, to emphasize the atmosphere.
PROTAGONIST (to the bartender in a low voice, trying to appear intimidating): i’m looking for the maverick
bartender gestures with his head to the far end of the bar.
shot follows protagonist in her first encounter with THE MAVERICK. she is in her 50′s, with grey-silver hair, asian and clearly drunk. she has a cowboy hat pulled low over her eyes, which used to be white but is now grey with grime.
PROTAGONIST (confrontational): are you the maverick?
MAVERICK (not looking up from her whiskey): depends on who’s askin’
PROTAGONIST: someone told me you were the one to talk to about cowboys
MAVERICK (barks a short laugh): cowboys? you better shut your mouth girl
suddenly the atmosphere in the bar becomes tense. MUSIC STOPS. the sound of the ceiling fan dominates the shot. protagonist looks around to find that all eyes are on her.
MAVERICK (taking a drink of her whiskey): talk like that, around here, is askin for trouble.
protagonist realizes that two hulking men have come up behind her. they are faceless white dudes.
one of them makes a move to gram her shoulder but she evades it and whirls around to punch him in the jaw. it is clear that she has a street fighting style as she brings her fists up to protect her face and dodges a punch
CLOSE UP of maverick still slowly drinking her whiskey, bored, while in the background we see protagonist fighting the two men
SHOT GOES BACK TO PROTAGONIST when one of the men throws her over the bar. she pops up again, with blood on her teeth. she jumps up on the bar, spits off to the side and grins.
one of the men grabs his LASSO and takes aim at the protagonist. his form is sloppy, however, and she is easily able to redirect the loop to knock the gun from the other man’s hand
SHOT GOES BACK TO MAVERICK, who is slumped over her drink and the bartender, who is watching the proceedings with a bored expression, even as the sound of broken glass and wood fills the air.
PAN BACK TO PROTAGONIST who is brushing off her hands as the two men lay in a heap at her feet. she turns back around to find the barrel of a revolver in her face. maverick slowly finishes her drink.
MAVERICK (turning into the light for the first time, we see her weathered face and sharp eyes): okay girl, now you got my attention
CUTSCENE to shadowy office. CLOSEUP of taxidermy coyote and deer heads on the wall. there is a someone behind the dark wood desk who we cannot see, because the chair is turned away from us. they are wearing a BLACK COWBOY HAT
a man opens the door and walks into the room. through the opened door we see COWBOYS IN BLACK HATS patrolling the corridor. they are all wearing chaps and lassos, carrying revolvers. this man is the only one in a SUIT, and as he walks in we get a CLOSEUP of the spurs on his boots. they are silver.
BLACK HAT MAN (in such a heavy southwest accent that subtitles are required): sir, we have located the girl
we hear sounds of PERSON BEHIND DESK standing up, such as leather squeaking etc. camera raises to their eye level. it cuts out before we get a clear shot of mysterious cowboy don.
(then idk but there has to be a TRAINING MONTAGE where protagonist chases chickens and hogties fence posts. she meets an arrogant boy in tight clothes who is maverick’s star cowboy pupil, and he teaches her until she surpasses him at everything, and they fall in love. she also meets TOKEN WISE-CRACKING WHITE CHARACTER. FIGHT SCENE in the middle of the street where protagonist fights swarms of cowboys in black hats and beats them all, but they kidnap LOVE INTEREST. protagonist finally gets a showdown with BLACK HAT COWBOY at high noon and manages to outshoot him and rescue LOVE INTEREST. maverick graduates her from cowboy training and gives her a white hat. protagonist, love interest and TOKEN WISE-CRACKING WHITE CHARACTER take down the big bad, but there is a twist!! wrt their identity. at some point the villain says “we’re not so different, you and i”. big & rich’s hit single “save a horse, ride a cowboy” plays in the ending credits)
