Derby bout tonight. Slowly puttering around and sort of getting myself psyched up. (Have just reached the "shower" stage, which leads to the "slowly get my hair kind of dry" stage, which precedes the "braid my hair and fasten it up" stage. For the record.)
People have crazy pre-bout rituals. I don't, not really. I keep meaning to, and don't.

Our team captains sat us down last night and showed us this video to psych us up. Then we spent the rest of the meeting watching random hilarity on YouTube, because, well, we're sort of like that.
Obviously, we're dorks.

I put an album up on Facebook of the behind-the-scenes shots from our team photos. The theme was Awkward Sports Pictures, and featured us, on rollerskates, attempting to use / posing awkwardly with the athletic equipment of other sports. The shoot was even better; let loose in one of the University of Buffalo's oldskool gym basketball courts, we just ran around and entertained ourselves like little kids. (Several small children were, in fact, present, which added to the joy.) I can't wait for my picture. I don't know if the FB album shows up outside of Facebook, but I'll attempt to link it here for amusement value. No, I don't appear in it; this new camera's too intimidating for anyone to volunteer to take my picture with it.

I got a Tumblr, which doesn't have much in it. I'm still experimenting. But there was an outfit-a-day challenge, which I mentioned before, and I want to do it. Some people are talking about changing how they dress for this challenge; I figure I'll probably dress the way I normally do, but photographing it compellingly will be the challenge. I should finally get off my ass, set up a backdrop in the basement or attic or whatever, and get in the habit of taking frequent photos of myself; I can then get more familiar with both portrait photography and my equipment. So I'm sort of planning on starting with today's boutfit-- what I'm wearing to skate in. We'll have to see how that goes-- I should be working on that now.

I'm excited for the game but nervous. We keep losing by very narrow margins, which suggests to me that our physical training is definitely up to or even beyond par, but our mental game is basically nonexistent. So I have a job this game; our coach is not good at the focusing, and our captains aren't loud enough, so I'm going to attempt to be a big calming, stabilizing force. (I have no official role, so it should be easier for me to do this sort of informal thing.) We'll see how it goes. The team we're up against is a good one, who we took to overtime last year with one of our star players on the bench (they won in overtime, by 3pts I think, when our jammer was sent to the penalty box).

Ah well. I don't like Tumblr a ton-- it encourages reblogging, subtly discourages original content, and sure it lets out your individual voice-- through the filter of your preferences. You don't really *say* anything on Tumblr, you just agree ("fuck yeah!") or disagree. You don't leave comments, you reblog and add your take, in a confusing mess of nested quotes that can make it impossible to tell who said what. There's no central repository of comment thread. There's a confusing morass of attributions. It's interesting, but limited, and I don't think I'll use it much except, perhaps, when I know better how to use it, as a way of making longer, more substantive Tweets.
In which case they'll be auto-archived here-- well, the links will. We'll have to see. I don't like myself being scattered and spread out through the Internet. But we'll see. As with all things.
