Oh good heavens. Gotham Girls Roller Derby plays some of the most amazing derby out there. It's just thrilling non-stop. They have a "style", sure, but that's not even it, it's just amazing skating. Currently watching them live on DerbyNewsNetwork.

So.

Not much else to update-- well, I don't have the focus to do so. I've been taking pictures like a mofo-- bought myself the cheapest decent lens I could find (a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, retails around $220, cheaper but not much with employee discount). I felt bad spending so much on myself so I bought Z a Holga, and a roll of T-Max (black and white) film for it. Holgas come with two instruction manuals, one from the manufacturer and one from the, I don't know, marketing company? The second manual, glossy and colorful, is full of the word "serendipity", which is a way to spin the fact that the frakking thing just doesn't work. It's a box with a hole in it and it's not even light-proof where it's supposed to be. And there's this whole counterculture around it. I don't even know. Sure man.
So we got out from behind the computers for a while today, went out to breakfast, went downtown and took pictures with the Holga, my old film Canon AE-1P, and my D300.

Holy shit Philly is good. They're getting their asses kicked by Gotham but they're still, in a word, "amazeballs". The whole game is just packs skating full speed rocking around a track like it's on fire, jumping over shit and smacking one another and damn it's amazing. I can't even ever hope to skate like this. Earlier I watched some of the elimination rounds and there was a girl on one of the losing teams who was kind of my body type and skating style, and playing my position, but way better. So I'll aim to be more like her. She had awesome speed control and despite the fact that her team's jammers couldn't get through at all, was pretty competent at controlling the pack and taking every opportunity she had. A reasonable goal. Wish I could remember her name. (I think it was Hot Sauce from Providence. Big blond pivot with a fantastic white girl ass and great pack communication.)

I decided I need to finally update my look this year. I got a new helmet, which I'd been meaning to do for about 3 years. So I gotta paint it. I need a pinup girl as nose art on my helmet. I need something on there. I don't know how to paint it, though. I know a girl who used nail polish on her helmet, which came out cute, but I don't think it would give me the kind of control I need. So I need to look into that more. I also need the USAAF logo somewhere on my uniform. And I've always wanted to have some sort of version of the kill tally thing, like they have on the noses of planes and the conning towers of submarines. I gotta work that out.
Thing is, I play pivot. A lot. Last bout I never took the cover off my helmet. Actually last 2 bouts. So if I go all out decorating the thing... nobody will ever see it. So I have to ponder this. I've started by finding Vargas's 1943 pinup calendar for Esquire, which is the source for like 60% of the nose art of the period. (OK, some of it was the '44 calendar. The rest? Random, or Disney. Really!)

Anyway, gotta ponder that. I suppose I could post some of my recent photos. Everything's on Flikr and it's even in sets. So I'll just link to the sets, I guess.

Connecticut: we traveled out to skate their B team, which was largely comprised of their A team. It was close and interesting, if exhausting. 8 hours is too far to go for a "local" bout.

New lens: the 35mm. I took it to my team's annual Welcome Rookies party, and took some typical party shots, which it handled better than I'd thought.
Here, my team assistant captain contemplates the cotton candy machine.

And because I can't resist, here is my team captain, showing off how much glitter she has sprayed on herself.

Aaaaand... a derby scrimmage. I borrowed the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which costs about $800. It also weighs about ten pounds, I swear. I had sore muscles for a week just from hefting the thing.

The girl in the picture is one of the girls from just above. Can you tell which one?

Today I went down to the waterfront and downtown but I haven't looked at those yet, let alone edited them. Some other day I'll post 'em.

Maybe get some Humbrol enamel paints like they use on Airfix modelling kits? For your helmet, that is. More control than nail polish, and it should have the same surface quality as nose art paint did.

Oh, neat. Never heard of them before! Bah, they don't ship outside the UK yet. I will look into modeling-kit paint though-- I bet that's a good route to go!
