I guess that’s true. People are saying that it was expressly neutral in BSG. That’s nice and all, but in the English language at large apart from references to a show I didn’t watch, “sir” is absolutely not gender-neutral.
And I know that fantasy military does not equal US military, but my point is, there is precedent, there have been women in the Army for a really long time, and they are at this point functionally integrated by dint of much hard work within the span of my sister’s career even, this is very current and ongoing.
I guess it isn’t at all represented in fantasy, but it just really upsets me that it’s so fundamentally erased. An officer who uses female pronouns is addressed as ma’am. We’re so into respecting pronouns in Tumblr culture, but this is a bridge too far?
It’d be one thing if it was sporadic, too, but it’s every fucking fic, and yet, zero canon sources I can find. If it was A Thing in SW canon, I’d grumble but get over it. But I really don’t think it is. It’s a fanon thing.
And you know what? Ma’am doesn’t mean ‘old lady’ or ‘dominatrix’. And making the masculine form of address the default does nothing to help overcome that absent-minded misogyny.
