Kilij and Zaliha
May. 4th, 2009 09:27 amWent to Akron to watch one of our league's home teams (the red team) play a team there. It was a great game-- very tight defense, extremely good coordination on the part of the Ohio team to the point that our team's big-hitting power blockers couldn't even get TO the opposing jammer to hit her, because her blockers screened her so strategically-- very similar to the Cleveland team, which our travel team has played. I must say, our red team showed excellent adaptive skills, and indeed made up 30 points of score deficit, perhaps more, during the third period. But it wasn't enough, and the final score stood at, I believe, 115 to 75. Great game, great time, I shrieked myself hoarse, and it was actually kind of fun to root for this team wholeheartedly for once-- at home, I'm just always too much a fan of the underdog, because it's usually my team. ;) So it was a nice change.
And then I drove about ten minutes and was at Kilij and Zaliha's house. They were our neighbors at Pennsic-- Wicked Monkey Tribe, with the green yurt, the newcomers on our block. We got there around 8 pm and wound up sitting up talking until 4 am.
They're sort of on hard times, so they have to sell some of their shit to raise funds for Pennsic. Kelly has this color photo enlarger worth about $5k, which he's willing to sell for like $500, so if anyone's interested-- if anyone still does non-digital photography, it's a high-end professional enlarger. So do let me know, I have all the specs.
But here's the part I'm thrilled about. After spending probably 14 hours talking with these folks, Z is convinced that going to Pennsic would actually be fun. (I said, "We do just that, sit around and tell stories, only with even more booze, in funny clothes, around campfires. They're comfy funny clothes, for real." "OK," Z said, "I see your point.")
On the way home, Z said, "I'm gonna need some funny shirts."
"Yes," I said. I started thinking about how to make them. But I have to make my own garb. I think we might have to buy some. His body is less difficult to fit than mine, and I am more likely to do this more often, so it makes more sense for me to make my clothes and buy his.
"Hey," he said. "Kelly and Sue sew. Could we buy me some clothes from them?"
It's an idea. It might help them raise the funds they need to get there. So I'm going to see about it-- two birds with one stone like that might be pretty awesome.
Kelly had made some awesome Scythian hats, which Z and I wound up wearing most of the evening, just because it was funny. Wish I'd taken a picture, because Z looked adorable.
Anyway, it was a really wonderfully entertaining weekend, and I have to get the photos off my camera. And I have to go email Kelly and Sue about maybe making Z some garb. Kelly is approximately Z's height, though Kelly's built like a football player and Z's more like, well, a beanpole, so maybe he could even cut down some of his old garb. It doesn't matter-- Z could not be less picky about Medieval Times. So I'll see.
I am SO EXCITED to go to Pennsic, and SO even more excited to have Z willing to go. He doesn't have to share my interests, it just is awesome that he can enjoy the parts we can share easily.
I won't be able to go for the 2 weeks this year, but I think I can work something out.
