choli choli
Apr. 3rd, 2009 10:12 amI love cholis. I had forgotten about the cholis I made for Pennsic. I have two. One is white eyelet cotton, lined with unbleached muslin. I cut it out and put it together from a pattern I copied from online, drafting it to my measurements-- the first time I had ever done anything like that. It needed somewhat substantial adjustment-- side and bottom darts for the bust-- and since I didn't take it apart to make the adjustments, it detracts somewhat from the polished appearance. But it really supports my boobs, and is extremely comfortable to wear. It would be more comfortable, I think, in a fabric with a tiiiny bit of stretch. Not too much stretch! Just a little bit. Perhaps linen would do it. It has absolutely no give around the ribs, which is OK but means it fits tighter when I inhale than when I exhale-- that can get uncomfortable after several hours. But compared to the ill-fitting bras I endure most of the time... At least it puts strain on different areas of my body, and unlike some of the store-bought tops I own, I can adjust this one to put strain elsewhere by tightening or loosening which of the ties I fasten in the back.
The reason I bring this up right now is twofold.
1) I have 75 days left to decide whether I can make it to Pennsic, and pre-register. If I do go, I need to make myself a bunch more garb, and cholis are on the list. If I don't go, I still need more cholis. I am thinking that I will attempt to make one in slightly-stretchy material-- one-way stretch, I think, horizontally, to reduce bounce-- instead of making the ties stretch, which would be the bra-like solution. Stretchy ties just means the thing will slide around. Solid ties, but a sliiiightly stretchy body-- possibly with the cup areas lined in a non-stretch material (I was thinking perhaps with a non-stretch interlining along the sides of the cups up to the shoulder to keep my boobs more front-and-center and out of my armpits, where they don't really belong-- some booby women have boobs that like their armpits, and that's fine, but mine don't get along with them)-- is the way to go. I may be wearing these all summer... if I can perfect the pattern and get some actually made.
2) I got sunburnt wearing an ill-fitting, don't leave the house halter top. It's not comfortable enough for me to keep wearing it. None of my regular bras are in any way comfortable. And t-shirts are right out until this eases. I put a gel ice pack on it for a while last night that seems to have drawn a lot of the heat out of it and soothed some of the angry redness. I don't think it's a serious-serious sunburn. But it's enough that a bra, especially an ill-fitting and slidey bra, is unpleasant.
Today I may go brave the cooler, wet weather to plant those peas and that lettuce and spinach. I am glad it rained; I wanted to get some water through that new lasagna bed before I did anything to it. But mostly I have to deal with the dang bout footage today.
I really want to do some sewing, though. Oh sewing... how I desire thee. My sister's wedding reception (she's having two, one near his family and one near ours) in Illinois is in two weeks and I want to make a dress, but, I have to do it. And I just have such guilt if I "waste" time on sewing myself things. So I got to get things under control, man. I don't really have any other nice springy dresses to wear, since of the two I had, one requires a plunge bra and the other a halter. Boooo.
