So I actually know about this through work– I work in the online department of a small camera store, and B&H is so predominant as a competitor that we use them as a resource to keep track of the absolutely baffling array of pricing restrictions our vendors require us to adhere to. (Sony alone sends us 100-page documents in 8-point font with complicated schedules and their products referred to only by their UPCs, not the product name, and if we have something at the wrong price at the wrong time they pull our right to sell their products, or, worse, don’t reimburse us for the sale price. Little-known fact: when you buy electronics, the dealer often actually paid MORE for the item than you are paying, and is counting on the manufacturer reimbursing them for the sale price! Do you wonder why every local camera store abruptly went out of business? That is one reason why!)
Anyway. B&H actually has the staff to read these things and keep track of them, so I refer to them daily to make sure our pricing on various volatile items is correct. So:
Among other things, B&H is being sued for discrimination because they 1) only hired Hispanic males to staff certain positions in their warehouses and 2) did not allow those workers to use the functional restroom facilities, but made them use segregated ones.
This is New York City, this is 2016 and the preceding few years, this is ongoing.
They’ve done a bunch of other shocking things, but– American-owned company, in the US, in NYC no less. Current. Anti-Hispanic discrimination, among other things.
Just– if anyone thinks racism isn’t an ongoing and current thing. It is. I had been researching anti-Latinx sentiment as part of my Poe Dameron: Space Latino project, and this came up independent of that.
