Didn't get any compost started, but I did clear out a massive section of the backyard that was all the ten-foot-tall dried stalks of whatever that spreading perennial daisy-lookin' thing is that's along the back fence. I'm going to have to go through the dirt in that garden bed and find all the spreading rootlet things that have been letting those things creep along the back fence, and just throw 'em out. I've felt bad about getting rid of them before, but you know, they spread so fast. I've got to just deal.
I have no idea what to do with all these stalks. I'm going to have to somehow chip/shred them to get them composted. And I've just got so much brown material right now... I'm going to have to wait for lawn mowing season before I can get this compost heap started, because I need the green of lawn clippings. (Would it be weird of me to steal the clippings from my neighbors' trash? They're all so chemically-dependent, though, I'd be getting all kinds of hideous pesticides... I'll have to keep an eye out and figure out which neighbors don't use the lawn services, so I can steal their clippings.)
I have this big pile of dry stalks etc. that I've pulled out of the garden beds, all piled up in the driveway. I trample it periodically. I'm trying to get it broken up so it'll break down easier.
Did lots of laundry. Baked bread. Roasted squash, then made them into a cream of squash soup. Had a Guinness with dinner preparation, and finished it over dinner-- I never do that on nights when I have practice, but it's St. Pat's day, right? Live a little.
During my few moments at the computer I was reading a craft project diary of a woman who converted a tacky old dress into a bra-and-belt set for belly dancing. It looked so pretty, and all the tutorials on belly dancing attire that I clicked through to from that post looked so ravishing, that I am consumed with a desire to take up belly dancing just so I can make myself a 20-yard skirt and coin bra and hand-embroidered beaded fringe belt... I just want to have something like that to wear, mostly, and somewhere to wear it.
I know I really can't dance, though. So that's... perhaps not the best idea ever. I had been considering taking belly dancing classes-- either that or taking up fencing again-- before I discovered roller derby, though. If I manage to get out of this roller derby thing reasonably whole maybe I'll look into it.
Ugh, I'm tired as hell now and have to get dressed for practice and go not make an ass of myself after a full week and a few days off. My sinuses are packed solid with goo, to the point that i couldn't taste dinner, so I don't expect I'll have much wind; beyond that, I'm fat and out of shape and huffy-puffy anyway. So it'll be a disaster tonight. I just hope I don't discover that my knee is still bad. :( (We are doing one-knee falls. I may have to speak to the person running practice about my wussiness. It's rude to just not participate in part of a drill.)
At least I got some sunshine time in today. The garden will shape up well, I am determined. And I have more raw materials for the construction I need to do than I'd thought. No real digging today-- the ground is still pretty wet, and digging would only cause compaction and clods later, what with my concrete-like clay soil.
Need more compost. I'll give the current heap a couple weeks longer in its current state. I'm going to have to hold off emptying the indoor compost bucket though, and save it for the new heap.

Date: 2009-03-18 04:19 am (UTC)As it turned out, the only thing that really hurt my knee was shaking my ass at the bar, so that's all good. Huzzah!!
The soup recipe is a very simple one. I'll make a new post and post it, along with the bread recipe, which yielded the best loaf of bread I've ever made so it's definitely worth passing on.
