[sewing] Booty shorts-- complete!
Mar. 4th, 2009 04:04 pmThe first draft of the booty shorts has been entirely completed, and was much easier than I had thought it would be.
It was dead easy. I handsewed the whole thing, because a machine straight stitch is worse than useless for stretch.
I had Googled for patterns, but found nothing.
Fascinatingly, I did find a great site by a former swimwear designer, all about designing for negative ease-- i.e. sewing supportive and stretch-based garments. Fascinating, really!!
Pattern School.
Australian. Interesting. Not exactly useful to me-- there's a "lazy people, input your size here!" thing that only goes up to, er, about six inches smaller than I am. (I could probably do my waist and hips, but the stuff I'm interested in is for the bust, so that's the measurement I can't use. Phooey.) Um, in cm, but whatever.
Good discussion of tension lines and the like. And interesting explanations of two-way vs. 4-way stretch, how to deal with cut-away portions of a garment (where the tension line thus won't go all the way around the body), etc. I'm seeing if it's useful info in adapting the supportive kirtle pattern, since that too is based on negative ease, though a far lesser amount of stretch (and thus a greater amount of support).
Anyway. Booty shorts. Simple as pie. About to do my second version, in gold lamé. Wish I had a decent sewing machine though because that would make it way way quicker. Still, it was pretty relaxing to sit and stitch it all. I drafted my own pattern by tracing a pair of boy-cut underpants and adding a thick waistband and taking darts in the waist. I should draw up a tutorial. Maybe I'll post it to
sew_hip or

Date: 2009-03-04 10:21 pm (UTC)Am not really in any state to be taking photos of my ass at the moment. If it weren't being horrible I would, though.
Digital cameras were supposed to take away that lag between taking pics and getting your photos developed, but I find I tend to just not download pics from my camera for months anyway. :( I don't like being that dumb, but there I am.
Ohhh cramps, why do you plague me so, a bloody week bloody early? I am filled with despair. I have the funnest bout of the season in two days and I need my thighs to work, thx. :( :( :(
