I am still binding eyelets like a mofo, and haven't even considered the hem, but I have enough eyelets now, to the waist, that I can try the thing on. And shit! Yes! It works!
I got some photos. They're awesome photos, because it's cold in the room, I'm wearing a grungy white t-shirt, and I laced it with a broken-off zingy blue nylon shoelace that I pulled out of my roller skates after it broke. Also my hair is unwashed and I'm making retarded faces. But shortly, I will have photos of the self-supportive linen dress, holding up my ginormous hooblers totally unassisted!!!!

Also my attention is wavering slightly toward t-shirt surgery: one of my teammates is on the travel team, and just got her game jersey, and after ordering the largest size, it still doesn't fit her, and she's going to have to add "fat panels" in the sides, and that SUCKS. That just sucks. There's no reason that should have to happen. I might add that she's not even that big a girl-- she has borrowed a jersey of mine in the past, and it fit, it just wasn't comfortable over her hips. She is a hippy broad.
So I came up with a totally sick and also sweet concept for a Kat Von D-style t-shirt surgery, only roller-derby-ified (i.e. everything loose is stitched down so handsy opponents won't tangle you but if your teammate needs a shirt-whip off you it won't come apart in her hands, and also there are insane amounts of bling on it and solid panels so your name and number and team logo are clearly visible.

... Now I want one. ;) I may try it with a practice shirt!! Maybe the one I'm wearing right now that I skated in, slept in, and wore to try on my dress. Ew, sometimes I gross even myself out.

Thanks for the tutorials you sent me! I'm going to practice on a shirt tonight after dinner. I might do my old Dollies jersey, since well, I don't really need it anymore, lol.

If it wasn't for my hips, I'd probably be two dress sizes smaller. Good thing I need them for derby, or I would have had them lipo'd off years ago.

No!! I admit to jealousy of your hips. And the t-shirt surgery would be even easier that way because you don't really have to cut it all the way up-- you can just expand the lower part.

I'm doing my Crown Royal jersey tonight or tomorrow, for sure.

Eeee, I'm surgerying my Crown Royal jersey and it looks AWESOME!!!
Unskateable in its current state, but AWESOME!
I hope yours is coming out well!!! Take photos of the process!! (She says belatedly.)

I bought gold lace at Jo-Anns today. I couldn't help it.

I have two down, two to go before tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I can get these done (knock on wood). I'll try and remember to take pictures, the process I'm using is pretty easy so I could post it online if I really wanted to. Either way, you'll see the results on Saturday!

*chucke* Glad you got your dress done! I could certainly use a self-supporting one as well, so I'm jonesing to see the pics and the how-to's! Congrats! :)

Congratulations! I am, however, bemused that you made a self-supporting dress before making a bra...clearly this dress means you can make bras now, right? I hope so. Seriously I bet you could make good money doing that, and anyway you could save money AND finally have a bra you like. Or a dozen dresses with built-in bras. :)

Bras are far more difficult and complex. The dress is simple-- it's just very carefully fitted.
Unfortunately the dress is of a style last popular in the early sixteenth century.
I am trying to figure out how to adapt it to a more modern look, however, because it is very comfortable. It just doesn't quite give a modern silhouette. However, my shape is so odd that I never quite have a normal modern silhouette anyway, especially with the ill-fitting bras I actually own.
The one place that carried my size stopped accepting returns too, so I really can't afford to order online anymore. Boo.
But at practice Tues. night I was really psyched to notice that there was a bit less boob spilling out of my sports bra-- maybe I'm losing weight there???!! I don't know. I can't tell. I am trying not to get too excited.

But at any rate. Yes, today I'm doing some t-shirt surgery and more modern tailoring, then I'm going to attempt a self-supportive modern dress, and then I'm going to try to make a bra from a pattern, which I'll have to re-draft, and then I'm going to try to draft my own bra pattern.
I just don't have a suitable sewing machine. Oh well, whatever.

well, you've accomplished quite a lot despite that sewing machine. I'm impressed, anyhow. The one time I had to sew clothing (a sweatshirt, for class in middle school), let's just say the result was remarkable for the myriad of ways I found to screw it up.

I do GREAT at things I have to figure out as I go along.
I CANNOT follow a pattern-- if it tells me to do A, B, and C, and I don't really understand or can't see why I have to do A or B or C, I'm going to do them wrong or backwards, and get to D and have no idea how on earth to do what they're telling me to do, because what I ought to have at this point looks nothing like the picture in the manual.

So things where they give you kind of a vague recipe to follow, I can puzzle out. ("Make it look like this. Then do something to make it look like that.") I didn't used to be able to, but practice is making me better at it.

At the moment I have reduced a t-shirt to rags and am trying to put it back together, so it's possible I have spoken too soon.
