airheaded miscellany
Oct. 15th, 2008 08:57 amFrom Mom this morning:
Katy called me yesterday afternoon to say that everything had gone well and she'd gotten to see him but he was hooked up to so many IVs and machines that she couldn't even really see him, and that had sounded like it upset her a little, so I'm glad things have gone ok enough that they could unhook some of that stuff. That's also good that he can breathe on his own too. She said yesterday that they'd been planning on going out to dinner-- I told her if I were her I'd get good and drunk, and she laughed and said her husband had said the same thing. I've no idea if they did.
They were staying at the Ronald McDonald house, which fascinates me for some reason.

In other, more self-absorbed news, I have come up with an idea that is either genius or truly terrible. I'm not allowed to read books, see, because I'm addicted to them, and I get sucked in, and lose whole days reading them. A friend loaned me a trilogy, all good thick fat books, and I want to read it. But when?
I made a rule that I can only read when I'm on the bike trainer. So I read/rode for half an hour yesterday, and the book started off so slow I almost put it down three or four times. But then after about twenty minutes it started getting interesting. I was totally absorbed by the time the half hour was up, and only reluctantly put the book down and got off the bike. (My ass was horribly sore by then, though, so I had to stop.)
After having exercised, I then went to practice and found that I had more energy there. Go figure. It didn't last, and I pooped out pretty quickly. I definitely need to do more ab exercises. But I think that this bike trainer was a good idea after all. And we'll see about combining an addiction with a boring chore-- I love having exercised, and I love skating but need to do something that exercises other muscles, but everything else is so boring.
I got a really good night's sleep last night. Well, between 3 am and 8 am. I was snuggling with Chita and didn't want to leave her to go to bed. Poor thing wouldn't fall asleep, but kept opening her eyes and looking around warily for that other cat.
But this morning I didn't hear Remi scratching or clunking or banging anything. Finally I woke up concerned that she'd gone out last night after dark and gotten lost. I'd seen her, before I went to bed, but I hadn't closed the door until quite a while later. I knew Chita was inside, but Remi could have gone back out. Shit, I thought. Fi's going to kill me if I lost her cat. But I lay there in bed for a while longer. Well, I thought, at least I'll have had one decent night's sleep.
I'm a terrible person.
edit: I should mention that Remi was, in fact, inside, it's just that Z removed the placemat under the food dishes so when she "buries" them I don't hear them clinking. So she wasn't even being good!! I just couldn't hear her misbehavior. Hmph.
Having plunked down the cash, I now am horridly impatient to get my new skates. Boo waiting! But Paypal hasn't even cleared yet, so they haven't even shipped; once they do I'm still looking at a week, since they use UPS and are in Arizona. (I know the UPS shipping zones because my last job used UPS too, and I had a big color-coded map on my wall. PA, NJ, CT were one day; Long Island 2; Arizona was five.)

*angel chorus* So shiny! (Mine won't even look like that. I don't even care what they look like. What paint will stay on leather? Maybe I'll paint them!)
Katy called about 8 a.m.; she said they'd been to see David this morning. He was still heavily sedated, but was breathing on his own, and the nurse had gotten him to drink from a sippy cup. They had removed several of the machines he'd been hooked up to, and put him into a crib, as he was moving around more. So things seem to be going quite well. Katy said the nurses had called to keep them posted during the evening, and that she & Adam had gotten a good night's rest. The doctors are doing the rounds now, and they may decide David can go to the "step-down" room, where Katy & Adam can be with him; David's doing well enough, but there are administrative considerations. Katy & Adam need to go to a class on "taking care of your child who has had major surgery", as the incision runs the length of his sternum and will require careful tending for a bit when he comes home. So, things are looking good, with David, and Katy & Adam seem to be doing well also. I'll keep you posted.
