mmm... maybe?
Sep. 21st, 2008 10:18 pmToday Remi and Chita met face-to-face the first time. I held Chita, Fi held Remi, they both stared wide-eyed at one another, there was some hissing and yowling, I let go of Chita and she sat on the counter and watched Remi, who growled quietly in her chest for a while. After a bit we took Remi back into her room.
Then several hours later, we brought Remi out again while Chita was sitting in a comfy chair. Chita approached Remi, in Fi's arms, but when she got close (though she mostly seemed curious), Remi hissed at her, and Chita hissed back and retreated, growling and yowling. After a bit she calmed down, and sat on the counter again, watching Remi. In a little while Fi let Remi climb out of her lap and down to the floor, whereupon Remi disappeared behind the couch. Chita watched, at first with suspicious attentiveness, but then gradually with more relaxed wariness. Then Remi came out and ran out of the room; Chita watched her go but didn't chase, which was good. But then Remi disappeared, which wasn't. She was hiding under my and Z's bed, which is a bummer because it's very low and king-sized, so nobody could reach her. Finally Fi shoved enough things underneath to flush Remi, whereupon she retreated to under Fi's bed.
Chita was a bit anxious that Remi was missing, and Z distracted her by hunting through the basement for Remi. This was sort of OK. Then we shut the door to Fi's room again, with Remi safely inside.
Chita prowled around the house, a bit disturbed. Then Fi was loading her car, and Chita ran outside. Which she does, OK. But I saw her run over to the neighbors' yard, and went over to tell her to come back, silly thing. But she ran further away, and further, and I don't know if she'd ever been that far away-- several yards away. I retreated, because I knew I couldn't catch her, and figured she'd come home.
That was an hour ago.
I'm less worried than I'd otherwise be, though, because today Fi and I went to Petco or Petsmart or Petwhatever, and got engraved nametags, so for the first time, Chita's actually got a collar on with a label that has her name, our phone number, and our house number and street, so if she does get "lost" three or four yards away, the inhabitants there will know where she ought to be.
I really would prefer it didn't come to that, however.
Sigh.

That was Remi walking on the keyboard. She's settling in but still agitated, because her 'mom' left this morning and won't be back all week. I don't expect she'll be well-behaved today; she has abandonment issues and is probably going to fret after Fi all week. Which doesn't really help anything...
