Z is reading that great site about the guy with the periodic coffee table. He keeps sending me links to things like this: Death on the Breakfast Table: apparently before the 40s, Fiestaware used uranium to get their bright orange color, and what's more, glazed the whole thing with lead.
Yes.
He also had a radon-generation kit that was sold touting the theoretical health benefits of "all-natural!" radon gas, which is among the most toxic carcinogens currently known to man.
Anyway.

So of course I had to go sift through my iTunes library and fire up Tom Lehrer's Element Song.

It, of course, made me listen to a bunch more of his songs. All my friends in high school were pretty into Lehrer, and when I got to the UK, one of the reasons [livejournal.com profile] buschibaby so immediately became my friend is that she quoted, I believe, [Lehrer's song] Oedipus Rex and I immediately began to sing along.
Be sweet and kind to Mother, now and then have a chat
Buy her flowers or some candy or a brand new hat,
But maybe you had better let it go at that...

But I don't know how much of my f-list are Lehrer fans. (Well, I know about you, [livejournal.com profile] kkattowll.)

If I were more into that sort of thing I would phone up Liesl, but I never think to do such things at a reasonable hour. This is why I have accumulated so damn many freaking rollover minutes.

Oh well. I was actually singing his Boy Scout anthem (Be Prepared, which consists of a series of helpful and useful* admonishments to young scouts) the other day, and Z kept looking at me funny. (Well... "Don't solicit for your sister, that's not nice... Unless you get a good percentage of her price!" is not a typical thing to be humming as you sashay around the laundry room.) And I thought of Internet trolls, and I thought, the line that I just put as the title of this post should be emblazoned across fora everywhere.
Dumbasses.
(Yes, I stumbled across a particularly annoying bit of asswittery yesterday and it's been annoying me ever since to think back on it.)

Don't write naughty words on walls if you can't spell.

in other news [livejournal.com profile] marthawells linked to a community of fanfic about her books, which made my goddamn day. Those of you on this list who are fans of the Ile-Rien series are probably also readers of [livejournal.com profile] marthawells's journal, so that's not really news to you, and the rest of you undoubtedly don't care, but anyway. It really did make my day. [livejournal.com profile] ilerien. I posted something on there that I wrote in a file whose last saved date was 10/24/06. That's a damn long time ago.
So long ago I forgot writing it. Which means it was just like reading something someone else had written. Which was also a rare treasure. Usually I can't reread without wanting to edit, and it's very frustrating. It's made me so sick of all my current stuff.

Maybe I need to go reread some of my Tolkien stuff... That might actually be a decent way to make my upcoming plane journey go a little more smoothly. I'm kind of starting to feel better about myself as a writer again, so it's nice to read my old stuff and see common themes and the like.

Unrelated: it says on qcrg.net that doors on Saturday are at 6:30. When is the actual bout? I have a graduation party to go to and am trying to figure out if I can do both.

I highly doubt we'll sell this one out-- we usually have the "start time" at 7 but you know there's got to be announcer shenanigans, national anthems, intros for all and sundry, etc. I never ever have a watch at these things so I don't know what time it'll start.
The first couple, if you didn't get there early you wouldn't get a seat, but these last couple it hasn't been quite so crazy, so you may be able to snag a decent spot even if you come lateish.
