Shit, man, how did we run out of coffee?? I can't make the morning coffee Z seems to now need to function if we don't have any coffee-- beans or grounds. I don't know how we ran out like this.
Except that oh yeah, I meant to run out and get some yesterday but then spent the day experimenting with different styles of breast support, so I wound up in this farby corduroy steel-boned Renn Faire corset that's now three sizes too small and is basically an underbust corset but not designed to be. And I wasn't going out in that.
Then I discovered that the least painful way to be was to take off all my clothing and lie front-down in bed. Then I realized that it was best to also be asleep.
Yeah, I was really productive yesterday.
I did spend about six hours reading about historic costuming online, which is just what I needed. I am totally obsessed with the idea of going to Pennsic. But I have no idea if I really can.
But if I do I can go as a character from the poor poor abandoned Vikings novel and that would be such a valuable experience, and maybe I could rework that formulaic bit of nonsense into a wonderfully atmospheric bit of action/suspense... i know I don't have it in me to really hardcore re-enact, and will undoubtedly bring all kinds of farby conveniences along (I already noticed that if I go the Viking costume route, that brooch chain would be a perfect place to hang a mini flashlight conveniently and unobtrusively, especially if I could get some more authentic-looking gizmos to hang alongside.) But it would give me a lot more ideas as to the flavor, the setting and atmosphere and all that. I know that was what derailed the Puritans novel for me-- a simple inability to have any idea of what people would do day-to-day, hour-to-hour. A lot of my writing process involves turning people loose on a normal day and seeing what they do, then cutting out the boring parts and going with the action parts, and if I don't know what they're doing on a normal day, I'm not really able to get to the action parts. Boring.
It's not so bad with fantasy novels. Maybe I should stick to those.

I always wanted to go to Pennsic. Never did. Now I don't want to anymore. You should definitely go when you get a chance, before you get old and decrepit, and exciting adventure means a shopping trip.
But yeah, wearing a costume for real does indeed give one valuable ideas for writing. And it seems as though Pennsic might give you ideas about their day-to-day goals too.
