Z has packed my computer to bring to work with him today and is futzing with it at his desk while looking busy. It's at least plausible, as his office is all-Mac.
He's got the thing mounted as a disk to his laptop, and is going through it. My files aren't lost, all are there, but in a folder called "damaged files" there's a whole shitload of stuff dated 8:31 pm last night. Something went catastrophically wrong during the system update. It looks like my operating system is completely hosed.
But my files are there.
I asked if he could check my disk for errors, because he lost the hard drive in his similar-to-mine Macbook in a similarly abrupt crash that didn't look that serious last year. He said good point, and promised to do so.
But at the moment, it just looks like the system update just exploded all over my operating system.
I reiterate: Mac users, DO NOT install the latest system update. Wait for the next one. This one seems to be some kind of unholy clusterfuck. I'm not the only person on the Internet this happened to.
If it turns out that it's my hard drive, I'll let you know and forgive Apple. But in the meantime, I'm just going to be over here being grumpy at Apple.
