Me and my hot water bottle are having a little Zen interlude before the day's insanity starts. I'm trying to pre-warm-up my knees so when I get to the rink I can be a little pre-loosened. I am more aware of how tight the tendons and things feel inside my knees now when I skate.
Yesterday's workout mercifully started with an extra-long yoga session in recognition of the cold temperatures; I remain uncertain as to whether it was easier or harder overall to start gently with yoga and work up to the intense cardio kickboxing [aside: I have always found the phrase "cardio kickboxing" to be intensely yuppie/wussy, but somehow when it's Mia Mauler talking about smashing backfists and encouraging you to go for your fictional opponent's knees, it's not nearly so cloying]. I mean, leaping straight into the kickboxing, as we normally do, is intense and somewhat painful, but it's over faster that way. This time, after the long yoga set, I was really exhausted by the end of the kickboxing and was barely able to keep up. However, that may be affected by the fact that I missed practice twice this week so I'm really not as conditioned as normal.

Boring, I know, I'm just thinking about it so I'm writing.

Went to a house party last night, with the ever-entertaining e:strippers which always sounds way dirtier than it is. I mean, I watched a woman unbutton a man's jeans fly with her teeth only, but while she was convincingly sexy, the man in question had his hands over his face giggling the entire time, because he is as gay as a goddamn goose and so was almost everyone else in the room.
The house in question recently acquired a 42" plasma screen TV. They're nerds, so when we got there, it was hooked up to the web browser on the Playstation and had elmwoodstrip.org running. e:Terry obliged us by updating his blog right there, which was amusing.
I came back in later and someone had put in the BBC "Planet Earth" documentary. As I walked in, there was a great white shark leaping in extreme slow motion entirely out of the water to seize a seal. The sequence, which must have been less than a second in realtime, lasted nearly a minute.
As the conversation went on, at one point I noticed that e:jim had gotten down on his knees behind the couch. I assumed he had dropped something, and continued talking. After a moment I glanced back. He was still behind the couch, head protruding slightly above it. I realized that he was pretending to be a shark leaping out of the water, in extreme slow-motion. I watched him for a moment, and only when he had already closed his gaping jaws and begun to fall back toward the "water" did I point him out to the person whose head he was inches behind.
Hilarious.
(He later repeated this in the kitchen with the taco dip, only to exclaim in disgust because his tongue had dried out by the time he got the food into his mouth. "That poor shark!")
I also saw a Wii in action for the first time ever, which is kind of a historic first for me I guess... I declined to participate.
I still managed to make it home at a reasonable hour. We were slightly late to the party because I was so tired yesterday; I passed out after the journal I posted then, and woke an hour later believing it to be 6 am. I was dizzy when I got out of bed, and very grumpy, but I had to go to Babies R Us to get presents for the baby shower that I have to run to straight from practice this morning. (I will find time to change clothes, somehow-- I don't know what one wears to a baby shower but I know sweaty workout gear with wristguard-stench is absolutely not the way to go.)
Babies R Us is an alien world hinting at an entire alien way of life. Oh my God. It was horrifying. And the sheer amount of stuff in it-- I had no idea. I mean, I knew babies were expensive, but we're talking thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars' worth of single-purpose things, which you use once and then discard. Terrifying, and a bit disgusting. And really, what???

I did get some more presents for little David Smith in Georgia, of course, as they were right there and cute. I've mostly been a negligent aunt and I admit that.
Oy. Must stir my hot-water-bottle-heated stumps and get going. It's going to be a damnably long day.
