Benazir Bhutto is dead.
This is horrible, and the most horrible part is that my overwhelming reaction is to hide my head under a pillow and forget I'd ever heard of Pakistan. Mostly because I'm terrified someone in my government will decide to get involved. Because that's gone so well everywhere else. (And I know it's naieve of me to assume we aren't already involved.)
Am I a complete idiot to be nostalgic over Monroe's administration? What with the Doctrine, et al? (Though also, that's a fiction-- that wasn't isolationism so much as territorialism.)
I suppose it puts into perspective how petty my whining about our political campaigning here is. Nobody's gotten fucking shot. Well, yet anyway. *knock wood*
Ug, ug ug I'm all sick with worry over it. This is why I deal in fiction. At least when fiction gets messy you can be assured that at least the ending, sad or no, will make sense.
And those poor people. It's easy to forget that even politicians are people too. Until they die. Oh God. That poor woman. Whether she really was a good person or not, whether she would've been fantastic or a disaster, she was a human and now she's dead, and that's horrible.
I really know very little about Pakistan, but I have had a number of friends who were either born there or lived there, and I know that things have been degenerating into an awful mess there. Watching governments destabilize has always upset and sickened me and terrified me. My own government has been relatively stable for generations, but as a student of history I know how illusory that can be.
That's my uninformed wittering on that topic, mostly emotionally-driven. I really know only enough to be upset by all of it.
