In case you hadn't caught on, I'm not doing Xmas cards this year. I don't have time in any given day to take a shit, much less think about pleasant things, like the people whose existence makes me happy. I would send cards to everyone, believe me, and they'd be really cute ones. But I don't have time to get any, don't have time to send any, and don't really have time to read any either. So please forgive me, but there will be no cards this year, no joy, no none of it. I just can't do it.

I don't get Christmas cookies either. It's OK, it's for the best.

I have to participate in a gift wrapping contest again. I think my contribution will probably be a brown paper bag. I apologize in advance. I don't have time.

Next year. Maybe.

No bah humbugs! Enjoy the holidays! Don't force yourself to do things -- just wander about and feel happy.

My old office used to have a holiday decorating contest. The newsroom always lost spectacularly, as two or three people would just fling handfuls of tinsel around and call it a day. (Journalists are more into yelling "Happy Genocide Day!" on Columbus Day than your standard sorts of holiday observances.) But one year, the editor in chief made a replica of Stonehenge and said it was the ultimate in diverse holiday somethingorother. That year they won.

Yeah, we are too busy to be decorating...when we're here, we're typing away madly on deadline. Downstairs, apparently the circulation folks and so on have plenty of time on their hands. They've erected several trees, decorated everything...and we don't even have a contest going on.

But we do a cookie contest in our newsroom, which is always very popular. It's in three days and I can't wait. :)
