Uh.
Quick question:
What causes heartburn? I don't mean the scientific mechanism behind it, I mean, why does a person, who's never had it before, suddenly start getting it all the time? What have I been eating? Am I doing something stupid?
Early last week I started having problems with heartburn in the evenings. I almost didn't skate Tuesday night because my stomach felt funny and I thought I might throw up, and kept having really acid-y feelings in my esophagus.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, even Saturday nights I had heartburn in the evenings, bad enough that I kept bumming Tums off my middle sister.
Today I've got it and it's only 3:30 pm. I had been writing it off because over Thanksgiving I just ate ridiculous things at odd hours. But all I've had today is 2 bottles of water, 2 cups of well-whitened coffee (and it started before the second, and several hours after the first), a cup of applesauce, a piece of cheese, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Maybe I should just take it easy and wait for the seasonal stress to settle down, but in the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations of what I should or should not eat? I'd fast for a day to help things settle down if I thought that would help, but me not eating is usually just generally badness all around. (Cranky + dizzy + overdramatic + nauseated, usually, = not really worth the effort.)

And I don't want to keep popping Tums! This is an alien concept to me. I'd never had one before. I didn't even know you could chew them...

Or is this one of those things that varies so much by person I might as well not even ask for advice?

For me the difference was age -- because I started liking different foods when I was about 25 or so. When I discovered the joy of kalamata olives, marinated artichoke hearts, goat cheese, black coffee, dry red wine and the like I started getting it for the first time. Maybe you just need more than a day to recover from your weird holiday eating and get accustomed to your normal habits that weren't giving you any trouble.

This is becoming more and more of a problem. I begin to wonder whether maybe there's a virus behind it. That's not official or anything; not really even a theory. Just saying that a lot of people are asking the same question.

I take digestive enzymes because I found that to help while tums only make me feel icky and not better. u can get em at any health food store...I think capsule form is better than tablets. it could very well be that your thanksgiving is just hanging on...

eating or drinking peppermint relaxes the esophogial sphyncter and allows the acid up...so you may want to discontinue any new gum or herbal tea you may have tried...
