People keep telling me I don’t look 31. While I would like to preen and pat myself on the back, I am uncomfortably aware that we live in a society where people are surrounded by narratives that lead them to believe a woman over 30 looks roughly like Rose at the beginning of Titanic.
I get that sometimes, and I’m 36. “Really? No!” Well, no, actually, I do look my age. I’m actually more objectively attractive now because I’ve grown into my face, but that’s not what’s going on here. I also get the “But you’re not fat!” thing a lot, and I’m like, no, I definitely, objectively am, you’re just insisting that because I’m not Unacceptable to you. Both of these things– you’re not old! No, I’m not Unacceptable. Eventually there will be a line I tip over into Unacceptable, and then will you just not even speak to me so we won’t be having these kinds of conversations? Is that what it is?
“You should be flattered!” No, I’m feeling sick because now I know that there’s a line beyond which I wouldn’t be worth your time.
