Five a.m. is too early, Chita.
It is just too early.
And don't you bite me when I try to push you away. It's not cute.

Why oh why must you wait until 8:30 to curl up and lie there purring and sleepy? Do that at 5! I'd be happier if you did. We'd both be happier, I promise.

Love,

a rather tired and cranky
me

On the upside, I have some cute pictures I took of her with the iSight while holding her in such a way that she could not actually get into trouble. She did keep smacking me in the face though. But not very hard.

Z is sick, and somewhat useless as a result. Sinuses and sneezing and coughing. I tried to pamper him last night but there is just too much shit to do around the house, and Invisible Fish? His bucket, filterless mind you, had an algae bloom after I fed him, so it was urgent we got him out of there and into a proper filtered tank, which meant that I had to nail Z down about how the living room is going to go, as his "Well but I don't think we should do it your way" was not going to actually help me DO IT in any way. In this household now, if you don't propose an alternative, you don't get to voice an opinion-- I just don't have time to guess what you mean.
So we started putting the living room back together, and did get the fish tank set up, but I can't carry the glass-fronted cabinet either up or down stairs on my own, and so I'm going to have to wait Until Z Feels Better, and I have no idea how long that will be, and even less idea how long I have before I get whatever this shit is, and am then sick for, oh, hm. Given my track record, I won't be able to breathe for two months.
Yeah. Awesome. I'd just had the thought and then not allowed myself to complete it that I'd been not-sick for wow, a while now, and no! Don't jinx it!
Fuck.

I had a trial go of letting the two kittens - actually, all four felines - into the bedroom last night, to see if they might settle down enough for the bedroom door to be left open as it usually was pre-kittens. Hah! After half an hour it was still like trying to sleep in the middle of a squirming nest of vipers. Kittens were in the bed, under the bed, pouncing on the downie, fighting with my hair, gnawing my fingers, my chin, each other, causing strange bumps and thuds, while Tabitha did larger-scale circuits of the room, jumping on and off wardrobes... Eventually, as always, three out of the four of them had to be evicted. Really only Skye is cool and calm enough to be allowed in the bedroom overnight, if I want to sleep at all. She dozes peacefully in a corner of the bed, and waits and asks politely if she wants to be let out for a snack or the litter tray. Of course, she's extremely smug about her bedroom privileges.

All four of them will sleep together peacefully enough on the bed during the day, so why never ever at night when I'm in the bed too???

OMG annoying.

I grew up in a household that had three cats, but five bedrooms, plus a downstairs and an exit to the outdoors, and so there was always somewhere else for the cats to amuse themselves. This sort of claustrophobia is new to me.

OMG I KNOW. She spends HOURS sleeping!! Often even when we're home!! We'll be sitting around chatting in the evening, and she's zonked out beside one of us...
I'm starting to get to the point that I'm tempted to wake her if I see her sleeping, just to get back at her.

For a while I knew that if I wasn't home of an evening, and left her on her own too long, she'd get hyper the next morning and I'd not be allowed to sleep. But I've been home in the evenings and she's doing this! I don't know.

But mom, if I sleep through 'til 8:30, hunting time will be over and I'll have missed all the big game! :P

In spite of how furry my kitty is (she's a very fluffy torty), she does just fine in the summer. But I always notice that she gets really playful as soon as the weather cools just down just a teeny bit. Much swishy tail action at dawn and dusk.

Happy belated birthday, btw!!!
I hope you did something fun to celebrate. :D

> birthday

Thanks! Yes, I went to Toronto with my cousin who is 8 days older than me so we had kinda a joint birthday celebration.
Aw man it just occurred to me that i didn't have any cake. Bah! Well, I had ice cream.

Chita isn't very furry. When it's really, really hot I notice she's a lot less active, but then, we have a cold cold basement, and she runs around down there if I go down there. I wish I had time to make her a playground down there. This winter I plan on getting a space heater and furnishing that area, like with a workshop and stuff, so I'll have a playground for her then. I swear. (Right, once she's too old to care about it.)

It may actually have something to do with the fact that a lot of prey animals are crepuscular-- that is, most active at dawn and dusk. Deer are, for sure, but I imagine a lot more small animals are. So it may just be that predators are attuned to that instinctively. Things stir just before the sun rises-- birds sing, rabbits feed, mice wake-- and cats want to be involved in it.

Which is just a poetic way of saying, "HI I'M AWAKE MOMMY LET'S DO STUFF NOW", which impulse tends to fade once the sun's all the way up.
