Not that I'm not totally enthralled in my work, but today I was looking through the game/season stats that I was sent as my roller derby team's media person, with an eye toward perhaps working them into a season's-end press release to send out early next week.

I noticed a certain couple of things. Most of the more interesting statistics are in relation to the jammers. It was really neat to be able to see what points were scored during what jam. (The NCKO's newest jammer, in her first game, scored 17 points in her first jam. That's crazy. Most jammers didn't make 17 in the whole game.)

It's more interesting if you saw any of the games. Because the ones with the most points are not necessarily the ones you noticed during the game and said "wow that chick's doing awesome." In fact, it's astonishingly often not the one you noticed.

So here's a brief overview of the top-scoring jammers, just for your perusal. (NCKO=Nickel City Knockouts; SS=Suicidal Saucies; DD= Devil Dollies)

POINTS SCORED IN FINAL GAME:
#19 (Argo of the NCKO): 51
#42 (Alley Oops, SS): 48
#716 (Lady Rage, DD): 41
#41 (Redfox, DD): 40

SEASON TOTALS:

#41 (Redfox, DD): 124
#null (Mexicali Bruise, SS): 124
#459 (Janeiac, NCKO): 121
#716 (Lady Rage, DD): 115

What's funny is that even the Devil Dollies' own captain still considers #716 to be her best jammer, even though as can be seen above, #41 was already well ahead of her in season point totals before this last bout.

And in league-wide voting for MVP-style awards, #459 was not in the top three for 'best jammer', even though she was second in the league for point totals when nominations were taken. But she scores points by sneaking through gaps in the defense, and defensewomen often do not notice she has even passed them, but are still looking over their shoulders for her to come up when she has already broken through the pack in front.

She is thinking of retiring from the sport, but we're begging her not to.

The "sneaky jammer" offense is a lot less common than outsiders to the sport think. Most jammers break through by virtue of being good at ducking. #459 just has a magical power of being where you think she isn't. #41's superpower, however, is by having excellent balance; often when a defensewoman, even a really big hard-hitting defenswoman, hits her, she remains upright while her attacker falls. She doesn't do anything spectacular, she just skates fast and almost never falls. Her showboating is minimal-- she raises her arms, but she is so intense, so focused, so driven-- and so fast-- that she is around the track and in among the pack again, unstoppable, before the other jammers would be done shaking their asses. She skates like a panther would, all lithe-limbed, low to the ground, long strides and sleek beauty.
#716 is flashier, showier: she blows kisses and lifts her skirt and waggles her hind-end and takes dramatic spills and climbs out of the audience. #null is the same-- you always know where she is on the track, but she's usually just too fast for you to hit her. They're the ones the audience comes to see, the big scorers, pretty girls, dramatic and beautiful. #null and her teammate, #5, have clever slogans screen-printed on their panties, and frequently hike their skirts up on the far turn to taunt the opposing bench.
#459 is barely 100 pounds, skinny, and quiet. She rarely makes a sound; she may call out to a teammate, but you won't hear her. She falls when hit, but gets to her feet and runs, focused on regaining speed. She is an unassuming person, quiet in triumph. You would never notice her in a crowd, and you won't catch her in a pack.

A nine point difference between Fox and Rage really isn't that much for a whole season of bouting. The only reason we think Lady is better is because she's a better all-around skater. She can block when she jams, as well as skate through the pack. As for speed though, I agree that Fox is a way better jammer.

Janeiac is a great jammer. You're right, she's quiet, and she's very hard to catch. Half the time I forget I'm even skating with her because she is so quiet and unadorned like the other jammers.
