It's not the sore throat anymore, it's an itchy throat-- it's very tickly all the time, and makes me cough. Right up in the middle, right behind where my nose passages come in, right between these two icky swollen tonsils. Taking heavy doses (not ridiculous, just more than I'd normally take) of ibuprofin has kept the tonsils pretty small, but hasn't stopped them from itching. Of course I haven't had a chance to go to a drug store and get cough syrup... but then, I have this weird thing about shopping sometimes, and when there are too many choices, I get all weird and can't buy any of them-- toothpaste is a problem item for me, as there are definite good and bad choices but I don't know which is good, and cough syrup? Cough syrup is a real problem item. Because most of it doesn't do a damn thing for me, but some of it's very helpful, and I have absolutely no idea what the difference is.
This is sort of why I wish I was a scientific person, who would be able to note and remember things like cause and effect, correlations and patterns and things. I'm not asking for a Nobel Prize, I just want to be able to tell the difference between toothpaste that hurts my gums and makes me gag and toothpaste that cleans my teeth and tastes nice, before I buy the damn tube of it and get stuck with it. Likewise cough syrup that eases my cough and cough syrup that, again, makes me gag, and makes my chest itch, and gives me heart palpitations, and what-have-you.
So I don't know what will help me. All I remember is that last time my tonsils were swollen, it was tonsilitis, and I went through agonies before going to the emergency room, and then all they gave me was ibuprofin and amoxycillin, and the ibuprofin gave me immediate relief. I could've done that at home without all that fuss, but I don't like self-medicating.Still I'm trying the ibuprofin now and it's probably helping, as I'm not in much pain.
Last night half a bottle of red wine proved to be a miracle cure in that I forgot about my chest for a good few hours and had a lovely evening. But I can't exactly bring that to work. (I checked, there's a company policy against drinking or doing drugs. Curses! Why can't I work at Dave's office?)
Ahh well. Last night I did some pro writing (a food review-- oh, what a food review) instead of working on my book for
novel_in_90. 960 words, but they probably don't count. Before that, instead of going to roller derby, I made dinner for two or three nights-- steak and mushroom pie for last night, with some leftovers, and then chicken parisienne only with fresh mushrooms instead of canned, for tonight. That will be yummy.
This morning I woke and had to cough a lot to bring up some really disturbingly solid goo that had settled in my chest. Z was awake before I left, and instead of greeting me with "good morning" he greeted me with, "you don't sound like someone who should be going to work," which startled me, as I didn't feel all that bad. I was cold, but it was cold in the house, and I was sleepy, but I hadn't slept well. The coughing wasn't painful, so it didn't register that it sounded really horrible. Well, of course it did, if I was bringing up solid matter. Eugh.
So if it's not better by tonight, I'll go to the urgent-care clinic that is about 2 doors down from Z's office. It's open from 5pm to 8pm, so we'll see if they can help me. And it's affiliated with the health insurance I had up till Friday, and am trying to get interim health insurance through, so-- we'll see if they can help me. I don't know that it isn't just a cold, though.
But I am driven towards caution by my teammate Sissy, who at Sunday's practice was so badly affected by her allergies and a chest infection that she was getting winded as she tried to talk. She visited the hospital later that morning, and then the next day was admitted with pneumonia. I felt a lot better about being a wuss after that-- I'd told myself that if she was well enough to skate, so was I, and so I made myself keep going long after I was tired, but after she left, I sat down and realized I was too tired to get up again, and regretfully told the team captain that that was that for the day. I only missed a few, non-intensive drills, but I was really sucking for the last couple-- there was one where we had to do a knee slide and then get back up, and i kept getting down on the knee and then sitting there, trying to think of how to get myself back up. Not easy. At times like that I wish I weighed 90 pounds. It must be easier if you're littler...

Good for you for the food review! Is it for the same publication as the last review you did (it was for a tea shop, right??)?

Date: 2007-06-07 05:41 am (UTC)Toothpast that has a lot of Sodium Laureth Sulfate will burn your gums... Toothpaste that has a lot of fluoride in it will make you nausious. I prefer Crest (Multicare?) Cinnamon flavored. Crest is non abrasive and has a reasonable ammount of fluoride, less than some, but enough to be effective... and the gel toothpates tend to have less Sodium Laureth Sulfate than the paste toothpastes. SLS makes the toothpaste foamy, so if your mouth runneth over, and your gums get irritated, than that paste has too much SLS for you.
ALSO note that you should use a soft bristled toothbrush. Medium, and GOD FORBID! Hard bristles are good for cleaning grout, but rip gum tissue to shreds!
Cough Syrup: If you are congested and have goo - try Robitussin CF. It's my miricle worker.
If you have a dry hacking cough Vicks 44M is amazing.
The other product I find helpful is the waterless vaporizor by vicks. You put these little pads in and plug it in and the whole room is mentholated. It saved my life when I had a sinus infection!
/product queen novel.

That'll learn me to pay attention.
But there's only one flavor of "mint" toothpaste I like, and i don't know which flavor it is. I don't like cinnamon toothpaste, sadly. But I don't know if it's "wintermint" or "spearmint" or "fresh mint" or any of that crap-- I just know it isn't "peppermint"!
