I forgot to mention this.
My baby wee sister (who is, I believe, 22 now) has just moved to Chicago with her shiny new degree in Natural Resources from Cornell. She has a blog, here, wherein you can see, among other things, a photo of my astonishingly-bearded father. In said blog she has posted a link to her new employer, Plants of Concern.

She is new to Chicago and has no friends there, and is at a conference this weekend so she is missing her own graduation ceremony and all the attendant opportunities to say farewell to her friends from college. So she's a little down, and a little lonely.
I'm not asking a bunch of Internet 'strangers' to go hang out with her, but I'd appreciate some suggestions on Things Not To Be Missed in Chicago, and some tips on how to get by there.

(I do hear that the cicadas are having a poor showing. Baby Sister is deeply unimpressed.)

In particular if anyone knows of any Irish traditional music sessions I've been pestering her to get back into attending those. And tell me all about the summer festivals-- I know there must be a ton of those!!

Anyway-- I'll more than likely be going out to visit her this summer sometime, so, certainly suggest events and things I shouldn't miss! I'd love to meet up with any of you who are bored.

I do know I'd like to see the Chicago roller derby team, the Windy City Rollers-- they've got bouts all summer long. They sound like a good time.

Loads of sessions in Chicago. Check out http://thesession.org/sessions/index.php/search?country_id=0&areaname=illinois&town=chicago&day=Any&search=Search for a listing of them (hopefully the link will work).

The session listings at that website aren't always accurate or updated and it won't have every single session listed, so double check with the pubs. But it will certainly direct you to a few of them.

Ah, the Chicago Botanic Gardens. I took classes there when I was working toward my Naturalist Certificate. It's where I met Ray Wiggers (http://raymondwiggers.homestead.com/Index.html), who headed the canoe trip I posted about here (http://lenine2.livejournal.com/81918.html#cutid1).

I so envy your sister, working there!

Blues Fest. Jazz Fest. Celtic Fest. Those are just a few of the forthcoming summer events. You name it, we pretty much got it. (http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalEntityHomeAction.do?entityName=Special+Events&entityNameEnumValue=38)

Another primary source of info regarding anything going on in the city on any given day is The Reader. It’s available in hardcopy for free at many bookstores and coffee shops, and it’s online at chireader.com (http://www.chireader.com).

In particular if anyone knows of any Irish traditional music sessions I've been pestering her to get back into attending those.

I don’t know about this as much since, until the smoking ban goes into effect in January, I’m not much of a bargoer. But on the north side, there are a TON of Irish pubs that I’m sure have traditional Irish music. One place she should definitely check out is The Abbey Pub. (http://www.abbeypub.com/) My fiancée might know more--I’ll ask him this evening.

Anyway-- I'll more than likely be going out to visit her this summer sometime, so, certainly suggest events and things I shouldn't miss! I'd love to meet up with any of you who are bored.

Oh, I’d love to meet you, Miz B! Just let me know when you’re in town. :D
