day off, but only sort of
May. 11th, 2007 12:24 pmThank God they decided not to have me start my new job today. The house is a shambles and I'm supposed to somehow get us packed up and ready for a trip of indeterminate length starting at 5 pm today. There's no way it would have happened. So bless them for having sense.
I've got the laundry under control, at least, and am about to pack-- Z hasn't had even a second to consider packing, but fortunately he's so unfussy that I can just pack for him. I'm going to pick him up from work and we're driving down to Cortland tonight, so that we can leave at a sane hour from there to get to Long Island by early afternoon. As an added bonus, we can caravan with Fiona and her boyfriend, who has a big ol' SUV so there'll be some room for luggage. Hopefully we can swing caravaning with them on the way back, so that we can fit the Norwegians' luggage into our tiny car... If not, at least I can send some of my luggage up with them and pick it up when we come through later. Or... something. I don't really know how that would work either but I'll make something work.
This has, however, made me realize that my goal of bringing my skate bag and skating a practice with the Long Island Roller Rebels is kind of unreasonable. I can't really justify the bulk of the skate bag in the trunk, especially if we're going to leave the NY metro area on Sunday. I just won't be there long enough to skate with them. Nor am I likely to make a skate with the Albany All-Stars.
I feel less bad about this, however, because I know that now that I have weekends off, I'm much more likely to do a little traveling, so I'll totally get some out-of-town skating in later.
Anyhow. I'll be leaving for central NY at 5pm, then Long Island Sat AM; Maureen's wedding is Sat evening, then Sun am is Mother's Day, so we're taking Mom out for brunch somewhere in the NYC area. I think we'll leave Sun afternoon-- I had wanted to spend the day in NYC but I really doubt there'll wind up being anything like sufficient time for that-- and my current tentative plan is to head for Cortland/Ithaca that evening, stay in someplace around there that night, and then spend Monday driving up to Buffalo via the Scenic route-- maybe we can shop around Ithaca a bit, hang out with Ann, have some fun see some sights. Maybe we could hit a winery or two-- at least Bully Hill-- and sightsee. Maybe a quick hike in Watkins Glen which ought to be open by now but I should check? If not, Letchworth--
Then up to Buffalo. Actually it'd be pretty sweet to get there by Monday night because there's a Sabres game and I think that'd be a relevant cultural experience. Then we could spend Tuesday shopping, sightseeing, and hanging out.
Tuesday night I want to be at roller derby practice. There's a lot going on and I think I really need to confirm with the other committee members what more I still have to do. (I have to spend the car ride tonight writing that damn press kit, really I do.)
Wednesday is iffy: one possibility is to get up super-early, drive like maniacs, spend the day in Toronto, and then drive home late late at night. That would be cool but exhausting, and would require planning.
Another possibility is to do a bit more bumming around in Buffalo, then depart for Melrose.
Either 1) I drive there, stay there until Friday, then come back, or
2) I put the Norwegians on a train and stay here and work like a crazy woman on roller derby things.
Tere's also a possibility, depending on time, that Fiona could drive up from Cortland, meet them on the train in Syracuse, sightsee or shop with them a little, and then put them back on a train that night or early the next morning. But that's really up to her and I don't know if it's possible at all. She does, after all, have to work, and in Ithaca no less, with a dodgy car. If I drive, we could totally pause for shopping, but that's a different issue. I do want to hit those Waterloo outlets someday, though; Fiona says they're awesome and she knows all about shopping.
Anyway.
From Melrose, they can do a little local sightseeing, hang out on the family farm, meet the menagerie, shoot some guns, get weirded out by how weird my parents are (man I really want to go home; haven't been since Xmas I think)... The usual. Then they can easily hop a train Friday morning and get to NY with time to sightsee and hang out, before they have to fly home on Saturday or Sunday.
Whew, that was a lot of thinking and maybes.
Anyhow.
I have to go finish the laundry and pack now.
