that time of year
May. 4th, 2007 09:55 pmIt's that season now, when the sudden distant honking of horns means not a car accident, but a Sabres victory.
The car horns knew it about ten minutes before the Internet did.
Meanwhile, I am addressing 35 envelopes and folding press releases in them for the Roller Girls, which is apparently two words.
I did succeed in making faux-official letterhead in Microsoft Word, so my skillz are not entirely atrophied. I have minimal graphic-design competence! I totally rule. In a very limited and lame way.
Go me.
Also I am drinking. Here is my recipe for a Sidecar.
I've decided that though they're traditionally served up like martinis, I prefer them on the rocks. And I sugar the glass.
Wet one small rocks glass, making sure to get the rim wet. Shake dry (just give it a flick so there are no puddles in it), then twist in shallow cup (small Tupperware lid with 1 Tbsp regular granulated sugar works well) of sugar to rim.
Fill separate glass with ice. Over ice, pour 1/2 oz triple sec, 1/2 oz grand marnier (if you have Cointreau, substitute 1 oz Cointreau for both previous ingredients). Splash with lemon juice if you have.
Add 1.5 to 2 oz. brandy.
Add 1 oz sour mix if you have it, or lemon and lime juices if you have them. (Awesome with fresh-squeezed, but not at all necessary.)
Swirl in mixing glass to combine. Then pour into your sugar-rimmed glass. Sip, turning occasionally to get more sugar.
Is v. tasty. Strong, tart, sweet, a little crunchy when you get a new bit of sugar-- just lovely. And it's the kind of thing it's kind of assholey to order in a bar if it's at all busy, so I like to make it for myself. (Like margaritas. Please don't order margaritas when the poor bartender is slammed. Poor bastard. They suck. If you must have a margarita, get it on the rocks with no salt. Poor bastard.)
The Roller Girls are going to sell a cookbook of their own combined recipes, which I think will mostly go to themselves-- I'll buy one-- and I think I'm going to do a page of basic "fancy" cocktails. Since I know a ton of baking recipes, but the shit I'm super-cool with is the cocktails.

Date: 2007-05-05 02:16 am (UTC)And your recipe for a Sidecar sounds really good! I would totally make your cocktails if you put them in the cookbook. I'm either going to submit my recipe for sweet potato chili or for white turkey chili. Maybe I should just do both.

Date: 2007-05-05 02:35 am (UTC)I need me some more chili recipes.
I actually made a low-carb chili earlier this week, which I probably wouldn't have done if I'd thought about it, but it turned out to be really good. It had turkey in it too, which I've also never used. But it was good-- I had leftovers for lunch today...
I probably spoiled the health benefits by having a corn muffin with it, but actually instead of cornmeal I used some random bulgur wheat and soy grits hot cereal mix I had lying around, so, maybe it's healthy?
I haven't died yet, anyway.

Date: 2007-05-05 03:32 pm (UTC)The one thing I really liked about this low-carb chili is that, while it left out any beans which in my mind is like half of chili, it had a lot of peppers in it. Bell peppers. It made the whole thing have a really nice crunchy texture.
