The final tally is that I have:
a very minor skate bite on my right thigh, which is not painful or tender and is already bruised brown and thus might actually date from earlier in the week
a tender area on my right bicep above the upper edge of my elbow pad, just below the deltoid muscle, which may be developing into a bruise but may actually never show
a tiny brown spot which is most likely a minor bruise on my inner lower right arm between wristguard and elbow pad, the severity of which is difficult to ascertain as it is smudged with black Sharpie where I wrote my lineups on my arm in the ten seconds in which the printed page was actually correct, before the coach started making subsitutions*
an eczema flare on my left wrist where my wristguard was-- I neglected to wear a sock or wristband underneath because the Pro-Designed wristguard doesn't give me as much shit as the Pro-Tec one. (I have mismatched wristguards because I lost the right Pro-Designed one at Dyngus Day. I have thus independently verified the vast superiority of Pro-Designed's spoon-shaped plastic palm protector over the flimsy narrow Pro-Tec shit one, by virtue of falling a lot, getting up and shaking my right hand and saying "ow fuck" while my left never hurts at all.)
no sore muscles whatsoever
very minor stiffness in my trapezius muscles from holding my shoulders tight from nervousness.

That's it.

Yeah, that's it.

*For the curious, the lineup originally had me skating only four out of ten jams. (After ten, we'd wrap around back to one. Depending on how things went, we'll generally go through ten to twelve lineups in a single period.) 3, power blocker; 4, power blocker, 7, inside blocker, 10 inside blocker. Just before halftime, the first time lineup 8 came around, Lizzie told me I was skating in 8 as outside because the scheduled outside blocker, who was pivoting in four other lines, was getting tired. So I skated 7,8, skip, 10. At halftime I told her I wasn't at all exhausted. So she put me in 6 as well. We started the second period on 1, and I was out for 2 jams as scheduled, but Mia got injured in #1, and so I covered #6 for her; the outside blocker for #8 had to cover pivot for her. So I skated 3,4, 6,7,8, 10.
I didn't jam at all, which is the position that really drains you-- I don't know if I could have. Looking at the numbers pieced together, I didn't skate as much as I thought I did. So that's not a whole lot-- it's only six jams.

I dunno, I might try jamming next time. Just as an alternate, mind you, but if I keep my fitness levels up, and get some practice in-- I can't find openings in the line, but I've learned recently that I'm big enough to make my own, and also don't have a tendency to commit minor fouls which means I can afford to draw one now and then. So I might work on my cannonballs, i.e. skating really fast, pulling in tight, and slamming through walls of opponents. We'll see-- we'll see how the Knockouts come together with the new drafts and the injured reserve recoveries.

I have started to do a lot of tripping, usually half-accidentally-- I only realize I'm doing it when the opponent falls. I have to work on that-- it's a nasty habit. I just sort of leave my foot dangling at the apex of the stride and so the edge of my wheels catch the edge of my opponent's wheels, and usually both of us fall but I can get up faster because I half-know it's going to happen. I don't think it's a habit I should encourage, because if I let it become deliberate it would be really dirty. But it's something.

I should ease up on the derby dorkery for a while. I expect I will.
Hockey: That's the first game I've watched yet this season, start to finish. We went over to Z's mom's house and ate takeout Chinese and drank Gewurtztraminer and Bud Light (she bought the Bud Lite because it had the Sabres logo on the bottle. Oh boy), and had tiny little heart-attacks through the last regulation and both overtime periods.
But mostly I kept watching them skate, skating backwards, switching to forwards, crossing over both sides, stopping and starting with their running-duck-walk starts, and just kinda drooled. God I wish I could skate like that! But I'm not even sure it's possible on quad skates. The different kinds of skates have different strengths and weaknesses. Quads are necessary for roller derby because so much of it takes place at such an astonishingly slow, grinding speed that I don't think you could do it on inlines. You certainly couldn't on ice skates. Though I'd like to see it tried, it would probably be far, far too dangerous.

OK, enough dorkery. I have tomorrow off and must decide what to do. Hmmmm....

Oh! Best of Buffalo party tomorrow night! Buffalo peeps, come out for it! The Rollergirls will be there.

In line skates

That's the reason why we have inline skates today.

Roller Jam did use inline skates http://media.www.iowastatedaily.com/media/storage/paper818/news/2003/09/23/Sports/Column.Remembering.The.Original.Roller.Derby-1096679.shtml

I love nostalgia much more than I should in a healthy sense. It's just that as an inline skater there is no comparision to quads. To me it's like riding an early 70's skateboard with metal wheels. It may be fun for a while, but in the end modern equipment has exponentially more possibilities in comparison.

Inlines give a different effect from quads but I wouldn't say it's better. It's better if you want to skate more like the Sabres, yes. But I still maintain that flat-track roller derby would be difficult to unfeasible on inlines. I was aware that there had been an inline-wearing revival some time ago, but it was on banked tracks.
Quads have come a long way since the 70, too.

I want to try skating on inlines to see what it's like-- I desperately wanted to go ice skating this year but there was never time. I haven't tried either since I got my quads-- I do remember it being much easier to learn to skate on inlines, when I was a kid, but never had my own pair.
I suppose I should just go to the rink and rent a pair for an open skate or something but I kind of spend too much time in the rink as it is...

You can always tell the derby girls who began as inline skaters - Fetish, for one. The way she moves isn't the way most of us move. Doc plays indoor hockey on in-lines, so she has gotten really good at moving laterally on the track. It's a different skill, but I like the quads better.

Quads are much better for certain things-- I think they're better, more stable and maneuverable at low speeds, for example, and I surely would not want to try to absorb a hit or take a push on inlines.

Fetish is largely a skiier, I think-- she really uses her body weight like a downhill skiier, leaning far more than any of us do.

Do you remember when Supernova first started? I didn't know at the time, but almost all of her skating experience has been playing hockey, on ice. That was a huge adjustment for her to make, for sure. To this day she still retains that tendency to switch body directions, and spins around so easily to go backward because of it.

"a very minor skate bite on my right thigh"

When I read your comment for a few moments I didn't see 'skate'. I kept wondering how some other chick managed to bite you on the leg - ;)

LOL
Biting is a major penalty. We haven't had any fouls of that kind so far. Here's hoping the league remains good enough friends that it doesn't happen.

A "skate bite" is when you get kissed with somebody's wheels. I don't remember getting it, but then, I wouldn't.
I hope I'd really remember a real bite!
