dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (little feet and modern art)

I have resigned myself to the fact that I have let things slide and oh whatever, I'll probably live.
Nobody's died from not getting all the crap around the house done. It's just annoying, and oh well, I'll take care of what annoys me most when I have time.

I'm going to cheerfully blog about completely random things.

* One of Z's coworkers used to work for the local type foundry. She was in charge of making the special characters, technically known as dingbats. For her upcoming birthday, he made her a mug on Cafepress. On one side is her font's coolest dingbat. The other side just says, "dingbat". That's pretty awesome. (Especially because, and I say this with only love, she totally is a dingbat.)

* Martha Wells ([livejournal.com profile] marthawells) is pretty much my favorite author (I say "pretty much" because one must always leave room for Tolkien, but he's not alive and, well, on my friendslist, and to be honest I love him more for what he showed me than the stories he told me), and recently linked to one of her own stories on her website. This made my day, because I didn't realize she had stories on her website. Whoa. Anyway, the story she linked to, I figured I'd rec here. If you like Angela Carter, particularly her stories in The Bloody Chamber (I have a copy, I know I do, I should find it), this is in that vein-- a little less deep-dark disturbing, a little more accessibly human, darkly entertaining. Thorns.

* I'm enjoying that self-reccing meme. Many of you, I've already read all the ones linked-to, but it's nice to hear people speaking in positive ways about their own writings, and in some of your cases, the things you're linking to are things I did miss the first time around. I had forgotten how thoroughly I absolutely love [livejournal.com profile] galadhir's Celeborn, for one thing. (Read this one if you like LotR at all-- it's what Lorien was doing during the Pelennor Fields, which is utterly fascinating besides being a well-told story. And even if you've never really given Celeborn more than about five seconds' thought, she'll give you a reason to consider him a lot more deeply, whether you love or hate Galadriel [everyone has an opinion on Galadriel, don't they?].) I can get so lost in her Doriath/Lorien/anywhere, the way I can't as deeply when I read her fics set in fandoms I don't usually follow. (There are a number of you who write in fandoms I don't know the source material for, and while it's entertaining, I always feel I can't really comment, because, you know, what do I know?)

* There was something else but I don't remember it now. Oh! I am going next Monday morning to learn sewing from Dave's aunt, who is a master quilter and has promised to help me puzzle out how patterns and sewing machines and what-have-you are supposed to work. :) That will be fun. I will be one step closer to world domination. And it means I'll be doing something structured and so even if I get nothing else accomplished that day, I will Have Accomplished Something and kinda be off the hook.

Squee! Thanks for the kind words and pimping of BotGW :) LOL! Poor old Celeborn! I do like to pick the characters that the general fandom thinks are worthless. It's fun riffing on all the misconceptions, but on the other hand it does rather limit the readership!
