expired cough syrup
Jan. 27th, 2007 08:06 amThe time to take cold medicines of dubious efficacy is before bed. Yes.
Last night I had managed to drift gracefully and painlessly off to sleep at around 11, lovingly entwined in Z's stick-like limbs, with my sinuses remarkably clear of their own volition, when suddenly my cellphone rang, and I decided I'd better answer it because at this point so many people have the number that it might well be someone with something important even though it's midnight.
But I missed the call, reaching the phone just as it rang for the final time and then went silent. And the number came up on the caller ID as "Unknown", which means the person has it blocked which means I can't call them back.
And they didn't leave a message.
So then I was awake, and my nose started clogging up, and I had a coughing fit.
Motherfuckers!
I got out of bed and took a shower, and then decided that since it was too dry in the house even for a shower to create any steam, I'd better take some cough medicine. The problem with that being, we haven't bought any lately. I unearthed an antique bottle of Triaminic that had an expiration date of 03 on it. Which, by the way, settles my inner question of trying to remember just when it was that Z had that case of tonsilitis. Oh yes.
Anyhow. I had to put some water in it to loosen up the thickened remains of the cough syrup. It claimed to have a decongestant in it, too.
Swigged it down. Went to bed.
Had some boring and mild sensory hallucinations, namely that my arm, which was wrapped around a pillow, felt like it was lying on the bed. My sinuses sort of cleared and I stopped coughing, however. Sort of.
Eventually this bored me to sleep, which was effective.
Now I have a terrible tickle in my chest and am breathing very carefully so as not to cough. Have to leave for work in about half an hour. Hmm. Do I dare go spelunking in the medicine cabinet again????
