ikea and toe injuries
Jul. 24th, 2006 04:28 pmZ's mom comes home tomorrow, which is all to the good as I am starting to feel itchy about getting back into my own house and getting some work done. Not that I haven't been productive here-- I have-- but I am yearning for an idealized memory of a space of my own.
I spent yesterday evening putting together the kitchen console Z and I bought during our fun outing to Ikea-- we got this and the wire thingy that goes underneath it on one side, and then bought this cart which can roll underneath it or can pull out and roll around the house. The cart, we haven't assembled yet. The console was a nightmare enough-- the holes in it weren't drilled straight, which meant the screws wouldn't go in, which required a lot of manhandling. Also the countertop had been bent slightly in storage, although all 180ish pounds of me standing on it served adequately to straighten it out.
We had also bought a set of martini glasses, which meant that I gleefully made martinis to drink while we assembled the flatpacked furniture. So it was a pleasant evening, although an incident wherein I dropped Udden on my toe and Z hung up on me by accident and then unwittingly left the phone off the hook provoked both of us into screaming rage which only slowly abated when I realized that he hadn't, in fact, intended to leave me stranded with a giant flatpack box stuck in the doors of the house and car and my foot too injured to come and get him. Regrettable things were probably said, some of which the neighbors may well have overheard, but you know, suburbia.
I think we deserve special consideration for having all of our theatrics before we even opened the box of flatpack furniture. The assembly itself went just fine: although it wasn't exactly free from snags, we dealt with it competently. Mostly, I kept out of Z's way, and cleaned the kitchen.
Today I had Z drive me and Bert the dog over to our house on his way to work, so that I could do more work there. I have entirely rearranged the kitchen and dinette again: photos will shortly be posted. Once I take some.
But my long-long weekend draws toward a close and I have not done the significant work on my novel that I intended. This makes me sad. Also I think I have angered my beta by not doing work on either mine or hers, and this is problematic.
Sigh.
But, we almost have tomatoes. They're turning red. The cucumbers are taking over the world, the peas are having a final hurrah, the red daylilies Mom gave me decided to start blooming once the orange ones I had gave up, and the tequila lime zinneas have revealed themselves to be... pale yellow. I'll try to remember to take some pictures of all that too once we're back in our house.

Date: 2006-07-25 05:49 pm (UTC)I bought a seed packet of Burpee's "Straight 8" which was ostensibly named because it would be straight and about eight inches long, but they've been turning yellowish long before that length, and I was taught that yellowish means they're going to seed. So I've been picking them at around four or five inches, and they've been quite tasty.
But the seedlings I started myself almost died when I transplanted them. So I planted some seeds in the hill next to them, and those are taking over the yard now, although their blossoms haven't ripened yet. I am sort of thinking that perhaps starting your own stuff from seeds is way, way overrated.
Although of the 7 tomato seedlings I set out, 4 are chugging along full of green fruits, one is trying to take over the bit of yard the cucumbers haven't claimed yet (the thing is seriously five feet tall and has actually exploded the tomato cage i just bought this year so I've had to bind it with twine-- I got an extra big one, too) and is covered in green fruit, and the last two, planted in a shadier spot, are half-dead and covered in almost-ripe tomatoes. So I guess the way to get your tomatoes to ripen early is to treat them bad so they die young.
The two almost-red fruits are still not quite red, though. Sigh.
