rainy day OFF
Jun. 19th, 2006 10:15 amIt started raining around 3 am last night, which I must admit pleases me immensely-- I have been watering the garden every day, and it's getting a little old. Some of the annuals I got have still not settled, and I actually had a couple plants die out front, which is exceedingly annoying. I am wondering if it is because I got them so late.
I am having trouble focusing today. I keep doing things and finishing them and then staring in confusion at them, thinking that there must have been something else I was going to do, wasn't there? And sometimes, if I go back over them, sure enough, there was more to it. Like putting on my pants and buttoning the button and then thinking about it a minute, unbuttoning the button, refastening it, and then realizing, "Oh yes, the zipper."
Suffice to say I'm a bit tired. Work called at like 7 to ask if I could come in, as one of the bartenders had called off. Given that I could barely stand up to answer the phone, as my back is killing me and one of my knees has gone wonky, I answered no. And then fell asleep again and was astonished when I got out of bed and discovered it was 9 am already. That right there is the latest I've slept in (not counting naps) in, like, a year.
Yesterday both of the girls I work with on Sundays called in to go to the beach, and so I had to open Torture Bar by myself. I was infuriated at first, but then the managers managed to find two other people to come in and help me, so we were at full staff. The other two they found?
They're the two newest employees. In real life they have the same name, a very common male first name, as my boyfriend. Let's say, for Internet's sake, that this name is Zachary. So one went by "Zack" and the other by "Zachary", although it was plain from their reactions that they were both used to being called either name, and neither of them could remember which one they were meant to answer to.
It was pure comedy genius, the Zack and Zachary show. "Zack" has been with us for a month or so now, and is the kid brother of an employee we've had since last summer. He's like twenty, and kind of a goober, and a bit clueless, and is convinced that he's cooler than he is; besides which he's too young to have ever gone into a bar so he really doesn't know what the hell he's doing at all. Zachary, on the other hand, is in his late twenties or early thirties, has bartended many places before, used to work for a liquor distributor, is very world-weary and cosmopolitan and what-have-you, and was wearing a rainbow "Pride" bracelet. It was Zachary's first day out of training but you really couldn't tell, because he knew precisely what was happening at all times, and if he didn't, he knew exactly who to ask for an explanation.
Hilarity ensued, but Zack didn't really notice, let's just say.
Zack's brother, additionally, was stationed across the hall in the Club, and thus in his boredom kept showing up to add to the confusion. They don't look much alike, but the two brothers have identical voices, so when it was too busy for me to keep track, I kept getting confused about how many bartenders were in the room. Which, of course, annoyed Zack, who does not like to be compared to his brother. (Although, in that case, why would you come work for the same place?)
Anyhow. It wasn't bad yesterday, contrary to my dread, but I still feel like I got hit by a truck, which is highly annoying. It was a relatively slow week. I should be able to deal. But I'm tired. And rambling.
Ooh, I know! I'll ramble about the garden. (I'm trying to get my brain to wake up so I can dive into the pile of unanswered emails sitting patiently in my inbox. Answering them while I'm this sleep-tarded is probably a bad idea.)
In the absence of rain, I've been watering like a crazy person (can't wait to see the water bill. Have I mentioned that, to a girl raised in a household with a well, the concept of the water bill is completely foreign and astonishing? Yet another thing about the Suburbs that totally floors me). A lot of plants are in bud, or thinking about blooming, but aren't yet. The lilies, the shasta daisies, the clematis, and a scant three surviving "tequila lime" zinneas. They might bloom soon. I'm hoping the rain encourages them.
The tomatoes are ranging in height from one to two feet. Most have little yellow flowers. I might get some fruit out of them, though I'm not sure when. Some of the peppers have flowers as well, which is encouraging. Two of the "pepper plants" I planted revealed themselves upon maturation to not be peppers at all, so I've pulled them out--they were weeds that somehow got into the potting soil along with the peppers I started. But I'd sort of suspected that, which is why they were planted over in the corner anyway... The rest are all peppers, coming along in various stages of pepperosity.
It's not working, I'm still sleepy as hell. I might take a nap before attempting to catch up on this correspondence. It has been a long week...
