Thunderstorm season.

Please, folks-- if you're flying, do it in the morning. If you must fly in the afternoon, please, when (not if) your plane is delayed by weather, please understand that your thought process of "What am I going to do for six hours? I know! Have a beer at the bar!" is probably not going to be unique to you, and thus it may be a little difficult to find a spot at the bar, and to catch the bartender or waitress's attention. Also, just because you're delayed indefinitely doesn't mean that you should set up camp at a table indefinitely and then go out to smoke, leaving the bill unpaid on the table in the custody of your penniless younger comrade for three hours.

You know. Just a couple words of advice. Please to be also with the realization that "ZOMG MY PLANE'S LEAVING" is perhaps not the ideal time to suddenly want to pay your check, as a) the waitress has been asking you if you need anything for like three hours now and you've been brushing her off, and b) Guess what? Just as others had the thought to come get a beer at the same time, now they are probably also suddenly urgently wanting to pay their check at the same time. Makes it a little stressful.

Ahhh. Sigh. There's my thunderstorm rant. Yesterday we saw severe delays to Atlanta, DC, JFK, LaGuardia, and possibly others, with the worst being JFK for the second consecutive day. Irony of ironies, JetBlue's schedule this month has eliminated their 10:10 pm flight, so we eliminated the late cook from the schedule; but two or three nights in a row now, the 7:something flight has left after midnight-- and yet, the cook's schedule not being flexible, the kitchen has closed at 8pm every night.

At least all the customers who've asked have found it somewhat funny, even if it doesn't help them be less hungry.

So today I have bad cramps, a very sore ankle, two creaky knees, and odd muscle cramps in both calves (the right one worse). I zonked the fuck out last night, which was rather nice, but awoke too early this morning feeling a bit like I'd been run over.

And then Z said, "I need the car today."
"OK," I said. "Can you drop me off at work then? It's Saturday and the buses don't run."
".... No."
In the a.m., Z's going to Rochester to pick up a couch with his aunt Jean.
In the p.m., Z's the designated driver for his buddy's stag party.
Now. I am not entirely averse to sitting around a lot waiting for rides. Yesterday, in fact, I took the bus that gets me in two hours early, and spent the time productively. I missed the bus home, and waited half an hour to be picked up. I could also have waited an hour and a half to catch the next bus, but Z was available and didn't mind coming to get me.
But today? "We could drop you off at 10," he says thoughtfully. "And then... Well, the last 30 [bus that takes me directly home] runs at... 5:10..."
"I don't get out until 7:30," I answered.
"There's the 24..." That bus goes down Gennessee St. to downtown. I could catch that at ... 7:04, or 8:04... takes half an hour to get downtown... get a connection to the metro-rail which probably runs all evening but I don't know... get off at University Station... and then it's two miles to home and the last local 30 bus departs the station at 8:15 so I'd have to walk the whole way home. On the legs that this morning have calf cramps, creaky knees, and a dodgy ankle, and that's before the 8-hour waitressing shift I face today.

God. I can't even express how awesome that will be.
"Um, Z," I said, "I know you volunteered to be designated driver, but, um, could you possibly designatedly-drive somebody else's car?"
It's kind of my only hope.

I'd call in sick, but a) they just reset the attendance yesterday, so I feel bad blowing one of my like, um, two sick days within the first week, b) they'd never believe I'd actually been sick on a Saturday, and c) I hate to waste a precious weekend day off on a day when Z won't even be around. Also, d) If you call in sick when you're not really sick, karma makes you get real sick later when you've no sick days left. Old superstition.

update: Oh yes, he can designatedly-drive someone else's car. Now I am sorted, except that my cramps are worse, I have an awful headache now, and I'm feeling exceedingly logy. Ugh.
