J.J. Abrams, the director behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, confirmed that there would be openly gay characters in future franchise installments, according to The Daily Beast.
During a pre-Oscars event at his Bad Robot HQ in Los Angeles, Abrams said said that he wants Star Wars to be a more inclusive universe, then referenced LGBTQ community.
“To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility,” Abrams said. “So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
WhenThe Force Awakens was released, one of the most popular fan-paired couples to come out of it was between Finn and Poe. Fans have made it clear that they’re more than open to the idea of having an openly gay character in the films. Now according to Abrams, it’s just a matter of time until one officially appears.
gotta say i read this as star trek and almost had a heart attack
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY FUCKING GOD
Would it be ungrateful of me though to be like
Nooo please don’t make Poe the tragic gaaaayyy
please don’t do it
please if there’s a gay character I’d rather they be minor and happy than major and tragically dead
particularly if it’s that they’re major and unconsummatedly tragically dead
please don’t let it be that a dude gets Feels and dies to get out of the way
That’s my tiny unformatted prayer. Don’t give us a single kiss and then a tragic Noble Death. Our Love Can Never Be, etc.
I suppose that’s ungrateful of me. I just have this crystal-clear vision of Poe kissing Finn like, one time, and Finn being like, oh, I don’t know what to make of this, and then like, instantly, Poe sacrificing himself in some noble glorious way, and dying with Finn’s name on his lips, and everyone congratulates themselves over what a great landmark in cinematic and popular history, but like
poe was written to die nobly in his first scene and we have a long history of only allowing gays with sad endings so i’m just saying.
