cold

It is cold here and I am uninspired. I have spent this whole day so absent-minded that I don't know what I'm doing. This morning I sliced a bagel for Z and put it into the toaster, but prior to slicing my own and putting it in and turning the toaster on, I wandered off, and twenty minutes later saw the bagel sitting in the cold toaster and remembered that I had been making breakfast. We ate bagels, somewhat late, before Z went to work.

I'm not even on drugs, I'm just like this.

Z's enquiries at work have netted me the home phone numbers of two bar owners, but one, a sweet guy I'd love to work for who runs a music bar that for maybe twenty years now has had live music every single day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, said that he's actually got a full complement of employees at the moment, many of whom are looking to increase their hours for the summer. He did say I could call him and he'd put my number on the board to call in case they needed a backup. I'm considering that.
The other's an unknown quantity, and I think I might phone him later, but not right this moment. Him, the publisher's assistant emailed to let him know I'd call, so I'd better. I am still pondering, however. Safer to take a full-time bid for now? Smarter to take a part-time bid and hope for these occasional shifts to provide entertainment and extra dough?
Sigh.

It is very cold here, in the low fifties, and I turned the heat off and don't want to turn it back on. The solution is to do some baking, but I don't know what to bake. I have chicken thighs, but no sour cream, so Chicken Parisienne is out. I have none of the ingredients for lasagna. I am bored by the very thought of anything that I actually know how to make and might have the wherewithal to create. ... I might bake bread. Bread would be something. I love bread. But what kind? And oh shit, have I any yeast? BAH, the forces conspire against me.

When we were first a couple I confided that I loved cooking, did not dislike cleaning, but hated grocery shopping. Z admitted that he loved grocery shopping. So I occasionally will just tell him to go and do it. The problem is, I'm awful at list-making-- I go shopping and buy what I see and think, "I need that!". I send Z off without a list, and he returns with only the things he thinks we need. Which usually means feta cheese, for example, but rarely includes, say, milk or flour or ground beef or sour cream, which are all things I habitually keep a stock of. (Many of the comfort-food recipes Z's mom gave us last year call for sour cream and cream of mushroom soup. I cannot understand why Z has been underweight his whole life, because it certainly isn't warranted by his native cuisine.)

What should I bake? What do you all like to eat when it is cold, in this awkward season-between-seasons?

Well, once you mentioned lasagna I couldn't think of anything else. Even though you just said you don't have the stuff to make it.

I know. That happens to me all the time. I can't come up with anything else.

I made cookies and bread-from-a-mix, and soup. It was ok. Then I realized, two hours later, that what i'd been craving had been pasta-with-red-sauce, so I made myself toast with red sauce and some cheese on top, and finally I feel better.
