4 times BB8 tries to impress/make R2D2 proud of his kid, and 1 time BB8 succeeds.

1-4 are all variations of flying stunts that Poe pulls off, and every time BB-8 comes back to base and checks R2-D2′s reaction - which is always “I did the same thing only twice as fast/dangerous/difficult with Luke/Anakin” and BB-8 gives up on trying to have Poe outfly some mythological constructs.
But then Poe comes back from being interrogated and tortured and violated by the First Order, and the first thing he does is ask the General how they can rescue BB-8 before it’s destroyed by the First Order, and the second thing he does is get into an X-Wing and fly a mission to save BB-8. And R2-D2 thinks that this, maybe, is something worth being proud of.
