Sorry I’m like, family overloading on these entries, but I did not get as much writing done as I hoped today. Actually I did some background organization on the Space Latinos concept, and that’s, I mean, that’s something.

But this. This is golden. This is straight out of my text messages.

Down in Georgia, my mom and dad sat down to dinner with my sister’s three kids, right at sunset. (I think mom and dad are visiting because my sister’s on annual training with the National Guard. Her husband made Lt. Col. yesterday, by the way, and so she no longer outranks him. He’s delighted, we’re all a bit sorry because while we’d never joke at his expense, we liked the idea of it.)

A pair of helicopters came flying by, low, and I’m sure my father identified them by the sound, as he’s a Vietnam Infantry vet: one was a Huey, the other a Cobra gunship. The 8-year-old ran outside to see them, and as he was backing up for a better look, he tripped and fell into the family’s in-ground swimming pool. Which, it being Georgia, was cold and unpleasant, but not fatal. He ran inside, of course, very upset, but he was so eager to tell them about the placement of the rockets on the Cobra gunship that he managed not to cry while he changed his clothes. (Mom phrased it as “his need to report overcame his desire to cry”, which is kind of that kid in a nutshell.)

Then the helicopters swung back by so everyone got another good look at them. That’s the happy ending.

meanwhile my other sister’s kid, the two-year-old, up North here, heard my sisters and her dad discussing how their health insurance doesn’t cover all of her doctor visits, only the well child ones, and she became convinced that the government was going to take something away from them and they had to change the subject because she was getting distraught and couldn’t explain what was so upsetting to her. Either she’s a tiny socialist or perhaps the world’s youngest conspiracy theorist. What’s plain is that they have a lot going on in their brains, those kids. (Surely she’s overheard her parents worrying about a state subsidy that they need to secure the purchase of their farm; every month it doesn’t come through, they have to make another expensive payment on a bridge loan. But that’s… not the government taking things away? It’s just the government being slow. I swear we’re not indoctrinating that kid with anything.)

Meanwhile my boyfriend is playing me black midis of “Wrecking Ball”. That’s. A thing. I lead a rich life, sometimes, really I do.
